Bishop Brossart 73 Covington Holy Cross 66 (OT)

Featured Replies

Brossart hit their free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime while the Indians struggled at the line.  The Indians were in foul trouble early with Arlinghaus and Wimzie both picking up two in the first quarter.  Hunt fouled out towards the end of the fourth and Wimzie the beginning of overtime.  Brossart made shots when they had to and came away with the win in a good back and forth game.  The Mustangs looked much improved from summer ball.

If Hunt leaves the game HC is in big trouble.

Brossart was 32 of 38 for 84%

Holy Cross hit a mere-mortal 9 of 24.

I thought they were at the line a lot but 38 is a ton.  I would say less than ten were from end of game fouling.  Lots of fouls by the Indians last night.  I thought it was a bold call for the Mustangs to foul with a minute left down only two in regulation but the Indians couldn’t capitalize on the free throw opportunities so it worked.

I don't know this situation at all, obviously, but frequently coaches will tell their team in these situations, "if player XYZ catches it, we foul them immediately, if they don't, just play defense."   Coaches all know who can make FTs and who may struggle and then give them the ball back.

Again, speaking generally, I have no idea about last night's particulars.

Brossert played great defense against HC's same old offense. Give to center, if center defensively cannot shoot, pass out for three pointer. This is easy to defend and all the teams in the area now know how to defend the Indians. Add to that their dismal free throw shooting and major players fouling out, it led to the Indians loss.

Not really sure about what is meant with the "center defensively cannot shoot".  Coach Arlinghaus has a good offensive scheme for their team in my opinion and proven throughout their season.  The Indians scored 60 in regulation even while connecting less than normal so I don't think anyone is realistically saying the Indians are easy to defend.  This game was about HC missing some key free throws, foul trouble, playing at Brossart (just leave it at that) and many odd long rebounding situations that went to Brossart giving them second chances, but it is part of the game and allowed Brossart to pick up the win.  Brossart is a not a high-percentage shooting team, but the second chances were key to them scoring a high number and they picked up a nice win in between more usual performances to Highlands and Cooper.

It means the defense has sagged on the center and she cannot shoot. Duh!

Rule 2 reads in part:

2. No disparaging, taunting, or boastful comments--especially between opponents trying to intimidate each other. This includes, name calling or personal attacks toward any member, username, team, or school. Additionally this includes a pattern of posts that inflames or incites other posters (i.e. trolling or gaslighting). Also, keeping in mind the youth of our student athletes, excessive "bashing" of high school athletes is prohibited. Do not comment on the manner in which another member has posted, or any violations you find in their posts. Such public remarks will be considered a violation under this rule.

I think Coach has done a tremendous job with this team and put together a very tough schedule to get them tournament ready. I follow the team as closely as anyone (and have no kids involved of my own) just a love for our school and programs and I have a completely different opinion. ?

I also agree with CVG in his assessment above.

In my opinon, there are 99% of boys or girls teams that would love to have a post player (like Julia Hunt) to throw the ball into to start their offense every time down the court. The fact that they have 3-point shooters waiting when they collapse on her is another luxury to have. The reason they shoot so many 3's is because of the double and triple teaming on Hunt so the ball is kicked out to players for open 3's. The fact that they are shooting a low % from 3 this year is a whole other discussion. I'm not sure what other offense would be better to run with their current personnel or is it more about who is playing and who isn't playing?

It is about 3 losses in a row.

How would you run the offense differently given the personel they have?

They need more of a transition game. All the good teams in the area have fast paced running games. The JV team has a much faster game thus their success. If they had runners, the center could rebound and pass to the runners for easy layups. HC already has 12 losses this year and the season isn't over yet. Not exactly a stellar year and more losses than they have had in several seasons.
