A head coach explained it to me this way;

When you are hired on day 1 generally 20% of the parents/alumni don't like you because they wanted somebody else or 20% of the hiring committee doesn't like you because they wanted somebody else. 

Each year unless you have immediate success the number of parents/alumni that dislike you increases by 10% weather its because you aren't winning state titles, you aren't playing their kid, or Nick Saben hasn't offered their kid a full ride even though they are 5'8 145lbs and run a 5.2 forty.  Sometimes even if you are winning games people still don't like you because of the last 2 reasons mentioned above.

So by year 4 the parents/alumni is 50/50 like to dislike.

When you hit year 5 and it now becomes the majority of the parents/alumni are unhappy with you then the admin turn and your time is limited before you get fired so its time to find a new job or move into administration.

 

I am interested in these numbers if anyone can access them. How many varsity head football coaches have been in their job 5 years or more? How many 10 years or more?

That would be a great statistic to have.  I am going to say that the coaches that have been somewhere over 10 years are at schools who are the blueblood programs that are consistently playing deep into the playoffs.  It would also be great to see what the average number of years coaches are spending at schools.

My guess is that smaller schools have more turnover, but that is just a guess...

Don't know, but I would guess the better the support, the longer the head coach stays.

I just did some leg work...I dug up the info between our Open Jobs threads and the KHSAA Scoreboard.

Class A and 2A have some of the blueblood, independent schools (and, all indpendent schools in every class for that matter= that football has been played there for 100 years give or take= it's a fabric of their community, ingrained)

Pikeville, Paintsville, Raceland, Hazard, Middlesboro, Mayfield, Beechwood, Somerset, Danville and then longstanding private schools (and/or "new kids on the block") where it's always been of extreme importance- NewCath, Owensboro Catholic, LCA, Lou. Holy Cross KCD...then you have places like Sayre who has exploded onto the scene in what? 2-3 years. Bishop Brossart invested and now are having really good success and I'd be shocked to see them slow down.

Obviously I left off others in those classes that fit that description, but it's always been important to those communities  (football town-independent schools) and likely always will be.

On the flip side, many of the county schools that consolidated in the 1960s and 1970s are really just 4A and 5A schools made up almost entirely of players from the county seat - a team that would have been 1A back in the day. Hard to build interest when in many cases half of the county has never played and has no vested interest in football.

Many years ago when my wife was still in the classroom she taught a class in sports marketing. As an exercise she had her students (many were football guys) document the hours the then head coach spent each week of the season, winter programs, and preseason (summer) practice. They were amazed. She then had them access the extra duty salary schedule. When they figured the hourly rate they were even more amazed.....and it really gave her students an appreciation for how much their coaches cared about them getting an opportunity to compete.
