Mason County BOE Approves Turf Field

If managed correctly, a turf football field could easily make a million dollars over the life of the field.

Then you factor in the money it "makes" indirectly.

You're able to take the person who would usually be cutting grass, striping a field, etc, and put them on another task. You're able to take the gas money from that mower and use it to put gas in a snow blower to be sure the kids are in school. The athletics cash used to restripe every week can go toward buying chalk for the softball field so the old chalk money can be saved to pay umpires. Fertilizer, aerating, etc, etc...

It all adds up directly and indirectly.

  • There is not space on the property for a proper softball field. They’d have to buy or extensively renovate land for it. Now we’re over $1million.  And that only benefits one team.

In Mason County?  How?

The same way the indoor track facility has paid for itself. Hosting events and renting it out.

If you can't win, then invite the teams that travel well that will pack the stadium, sell really good stuff in the concessions than watch the money roll in.

PS.  There already is a thread regarding Best Fan base in KY.  Go there and start scheduling.....

What events could they host that they already don’t?  Band competitions?  I don’t know who they would rent it out to and make millions.

I think you'd be surprised at the opportunities to rent out a nice turf facility, especially if there aren't any others around.

Band competitions, soccer, youth baseball, etc.

A local soccer club regularly rents out turf football field for 200-400 bucks a day for all day events. That could be 800 bucks made back to the school with zero maintenance required over a weekend.

Tie in a gate percentage and you've made even more, find people to work a concession and more is made.

All of the soccer teams in Mason County already use the soccer field at the school.  There isn’t any extra money to be made just because they now have turf.  Even then, I don’t see the “millions”.   It’s not Northern Kentucky where there are a bunch of people and organizations.  I don’t even think there are any soccer clubs in the area.

This is a big one. Our school's band is very good, used to go all over the state for competitions. Now there are a handful of schools with turf that host competitions each year (Boyle, Madison Southern, North Laurel) that they go to each season. Imagine bringing 15-20 schools in for a band competition (with 50-100 kids each + parents), selling tickets and concessions, and outside of a little bit of overhead keeping the rest of the money. Do that 2-3 times a season and the money adds up.

There aren't many nearby. Bishop Brossart, Bourbon County, Montgomery County, and Rowan County are probably the closest schools with turf and they are between 50 minutes to an hour away.

The impact and value a turf facility brings to a school and community is almost immeasurable. It fills so many needs and provides many benefits beyond just being a nice place for the football team to play. Schools have limited and finite space on campus, and a turf field is the best way to maximize the use of its existing space. I understand why softball might be upset, but a turf field is simply a better investment.

In this context equity means money so it is much easier said than done.

About 2 decades ago, I was with a high school team playing down in Miami, and they were being given a tour of that area of town (on school bus) and we drove by a fantastic looking baseball field and an amazing press box.  It actually looked like it could've been a minor league field.  The guy giving the tour said it was a high school's (don't remember if it was theirs or not), but that it was going to have to be torn down.  The reason?  A donor had given a massive contribution to the baseball boosters, but the school didn't have the same amount of money to put towards a girls' program.  So, to make things "equal", they had to "take away" from the boys.

There's lots of extra money to be made because of turn, and as has been stated in previous posts it will pay for itself between the direct money made and indirect money saved.

You aren't going to charge your local teams 200 bucks a day for it, but there are ways to make money while they use it.

Soccer clubs in Cincinnati/NKY rent facilities as far north as south Dayton, OH when they host events. They would make their way to Maysville too.
