Thoughts on Brian Kelly?

Featured Replies

I don't see another thread on Brian Kelly leaving so I will add this comment here. I believe what Kelly did leaving Notre Dame when he did is disgusting. Notre Dame has an outside shot at being in the final 4 for the championship. Leaving that team when he did is about as bad as it can get in my opinion.

Watching how the ND players and staff are reacting to Marcus Freeman being named HC, I think it might be safe to say that ND has won this whole exchange.

I'm not even sure how outside of a shot it is. I could see Alabama, OkSt, Michigan and even UC as possibly losing this weekend. They have a decent shot at the playoff really.

How does the NCAA fix it? Move signing period? You can put "restrictions" on when coaches can be contacted, but it's not going to stop AD's and agents from talking.

Side note for the locals: I see UC winning, but it wouldn't be a huge upset if they lost.

I went ahead and split this out as its own topic @Voice of Reason. But I'm with you...I think what Kelly did is an absolute low-life move.

I also think it is the product of college football programs being all about the almighty dollar, and that is a product of the NCAA conference system being as corrupt as it gets.

I don't fault anyone for doing what they think is best for them.  However, I have never been much of a Brian Kelly fan, he has always rubbed me the wrong way.

When you take Kelly's text to his team a mere 38 hours ago apologizing for them finding out about his late season departure (ducking out for more a big payday) with his use of the phrase "just know that my love for you is limitless".....and then juxtapose that against the fact that his team meeting the next day to 'discuss' his departure for LSU was a mere 2 minute "seeya, I'm out...don't @ me"......and THEN juxtapose that against Kelly's first meeting with his new LSU team where he says "We're going to develop a relationship that'll take time. It's built on trust. It's built on how we go to work everyday."

Just....man oh man....what a charlatan.

I do fault people when they walk over others, especially when in a position of authority or leadership. Kelly has no regard for others. Totally 100% self focus. Not the type of person I would ever want as a leader.

How is Coach Kelly walking over others?

Every player and coach in his program. Maybe I should say disregard for others.  The fact that this team is still in the hunt for a possible playoff berth, even though it is a long shot, is what really makes Kelly's actions so bad.

Certainly he is looking out for number one so disregard for others technically fits.

I just watched that quick Youtube video of his first meeting with the LSU players.  I think some of that was code for it is harder to win at Notre Dame for whatever reasons.

I took it as coach speak.

My evaluation of Kelly being a bad person had nothing to do with yesterday. It was the countless times I have seen him being a bully on the sidelines (yes, all coaches do it to a degree, but he is the worst I've ever seen) and there being no recourse for when the student videographer got killed a few years back. Kelly simply played the game like all other coaches. Ducking out before a bowl game - regardless if your team is in the hunt for a playoff spot - happens numerous times each year. The very nature of it is wrong, but he didn't write the book on it.

You can't blame a person for moving on to what they perceive as bigger and better things or more money.  It's how you handle that situation that shows your true character, and this is the 2nd time he's told his team "I'm out" and immediately leaves without conversation (likely the 4th as I've never heard how he's left the other 2).  If he truly cared for his players like he says he does, then he'd sit down and talk with them.  He'd talk to his coaches in advance about the situation.  He can blame social media all he wants about stuff "leaking".  We all know in today's technology driven era, word gets out and spreads within seconds so just get out in front of it all, and be honest.

Other take. Kelly didn't want to be associated with the as he believes they are not one of the best teams and would get boat raced again on a big stage.

It was certainly coach speak too.

I am not a fan and I agree with you he is a bully and generally speaking insufferable.

And to be 100, it was "leaked" intentionally. SECurity of recruits  is of the utmost importance.
