I read every post in every thread related to Beechwood. He is not a Beechwood fan. I don't recall seeing a post from him in a single Beechwood thread this year till this game. He seems to be a Garrard County fan based on all the posts he is making in their coaching search thread. I understand you may not know that so I wanted to make sure you do know he is not a Beechwood fan. The Beechwood fans disliked his post as much as the Mayfield fans did.

It was another fun season watching Mayfield.  Not many fans get to watch their team make the final four almost every year, so I feel very fortunate. 

Beechwood simply controlled the line of scrimmage.  Offensively, Berger had at least 5? runs where he wasn't touched until 20 yards down the field.  There really wasn't much need to throw the ball, save for a few third downs.  Defensively, Beechwood stopped the Mayfield run game without ever having to commit even 7 men in the box (it seemed like), which in turn didn't open up the pass game for Mayfield. 

I don't think the score is indicative of how good the Mayfield defense was.  Mayfield offense kept shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers, constantly putting the defense in tough positions.  Can't get away with that against teams like Beechwood.  It was also clear that, while the Mayfield QB did make significant strides this year, he wasn't quite ready for that big of a stage.

Hats off to Beechwood.  They have a tremedous team this year, and were just better than Mayfield in all phases.  As far as the Beechwood defense being the best high school defense they had ever seen?  Not even close.  This was the least talented Mayfield team that Beechwood has ever played (I would think most BW posters would agree), so I don't think we saw anything Friday night to sway any opinion we might have had prior to kickoff.  I commented on a previous post that having a QB like Hergott can mask many flaws a team might have, because he is so talented.  I would say that logic applies here, and Hergott makes the entire team (defense included) much better than they would be without him at the helm.

My point basically is every year we or the circles I frequent hear the same thing, my comment was stating talk is floating that he is going to retire, I personally don’t know if he is staying or going.

And by that you mean just LCA and Beechwood right. Those 2 would probably clock anybody in 1-3 A. I’m not sure any programs in northern or central ky besides Danville are world beaters. I think Caldwell and Murray are would compete just fine with anybody besides LCA and BW.

I agree on your point that Mayfield's defense was better than what this score shows. It looked like the Mayfield defense I always see. Fast and disciplined. Beechwood found early that they could not make big gains going wide. Hergott was not having success running early in the game. With that, Beechwood started running right at Mayfield with Berger and he found the openings. But it was clear Mayfield had their usual fast defense. Top 5 in multiple categories in 2A team defense. Impressive that Berger and the Beechwood o-line were able to do what they did against that defense.

I didn't go back and re-watch the game, but my suspicion was that the Mayfield D was overly focused on Hergott and that left wider lanes for Berger.  It seemed to be "pick your poison" at that point though.  If Mayfield would have started focusing on Berger then Hergott would have ran wild.  These losses are much easier to stomach knowing the better team won.  2A title game gonna be a dandy.
