Now this year Notre Dame simply is not good. Honestly I don’t think they are a top 25 team. Their strength in the past use to be the o line. This year it is a weakness, they truly have no QB, and the defense seems to be in a transition learning Marcus Freeman. 

1988 was a long time ago friend, the plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies room.

I think UC got a 5 or 7k allotment (UC sold out)... Notre Dame opened up some additional single game tickets a week before the game and Bearcats fans bought the majority of them. Were also a lot on the secondary market that UC fans likely bought up. 

It's a shame UC and their fans don't get more regional games like this. This fan base travels extremely well. Can't wait to renew the rivalry with West VA. (Even though their fans are some of the worst I've ever come across)

Should also be mentioned that Notre Dame fans were total class yesterday both during and after the game. One of the best road game experiences I've ever had. Fans at the game were much different than the "t shirt fans" I've come across in NKY and the online keyboard warriors on their Irish message boards.

Because every visiting team is given a certain amount of tickets to sell. Sometimes they are all bought up, sometimes they aren’t. Louisville had just as many fans there in ‘14, as I’m sure many other programs would.

I can attest to this as well. Completely agree about the folks I encountered when I went there.

Have they been the best team in the country since 1988? One could argue they were in 1993. However, since then no they haven’t been the best team since then.  However, have they been a top 3 or 4 team then multiple times since then, yes. So let’s not act like they haven’t been relevant. They have, they simply end up losing to the very best team in the country. The same best team in the country that also destroyed the other team they played in the finals. 
 

With that said they have to find a way to get more speed in the program. They consistently don’t have the top game breaking WR types.

Then the same could have been said about the other teams in the playoffs those two years Notre Dame was in the playoffs then. As I mentioned the two years Notre Dame made the playoffs. I think you are missing the point fc. When ND is capable of the playoffs, they get hyped like they are Alabama. They are always hyped above who they truly are. That is the rub for most people. We get assaulted with ND hype not matter how good the team is and they are hyped above who they are.

Does their name definitely help at times? Yes, no argument there. However, when have they been hyped like Alabama? If they were hyped like Bama, they wouldn’t have to go basically undefeated to have any chance at the playoffs most years. The years they have made the title game and the playoffs. They were undefeated, or last year undefeated until losing in a conference title game to a team they already beat once, so already had the resume needed before that lost. So can’t say they were overhyped when they made the title game in 2012 and the two years they made the playoffs. They weren’t overhyped at all, and deserved to be where they were. They then ended up losing to the best team in the country. 
 

Do they get national coverage, absolutely. Even this year they were ranked in the top 10 before yesterday, but I didn’t really hear anyone truly talking about Notre Dame being a title threat this year even before losing yesterday. 
 

I’m regards to this year Notre Dame is very flawed this year. Their name and being undefeated definitely helped in their top 10 ranking before yesterday. As you could see in the prediction thread, I wasn’t too high on Notre Dames chances yesterday. Overhyped by fans, media attention, NBC contract gets them stuffed in our faces, etc. Part of it also is living in this area with a heavy Catholic influence with ND God's team in their minds.

Congrats to UC on the win.  I was pretty confident going in, but the 3 first half turnovers really set the stage, and UC definitely were the better team, and deserved the victory. 

Is ND overrated? Since 2017 they have been as consistently good as any team not named Bama, Clemson, or Ohio State.  I don't know of any ND fans who think they've been on the same level as Bama and Ohio State. 

Are they overhyped? If people are still talking about them, after a game when they played like garbage,  then the answer is no.  They're a national brand, and win or lose, people respond.  Texas, Miami, Tennessee, Nebraska, USC, Michigan...all these teams get more attention than their results on the field deserve.

They definitely get media attention, and as you said the NBC contract is a part of that. Still doesn’t mean they are hyped like a Bama. To be hyped like Bama, then they would need to be considered favorites every year for a title. Which I admit their name definitely helps in pre season rankings at times, I won’t argue that. You already know from our high school ranking discussions, how even though people don’t admit it. The name of the team does give bias in rankings in high school and college, which the Notre Dame name definitely helps them in the rankings at times. 
 

The post I initially commented on. Was JA saying they disappoint every year, acting like they are always bad. When truth is they been a top 10 program basically since Kelly has arrived, and 3 years had chance to play for a chance to win a title. Then another guy acting like they haven’t been relevant for 30 years and that simply is not true. 
 

I fully admit their name definitely helps at times with rankings, and they definitely get national coverage. However, at the same time people definitely over exaggerate things in response to when Notre Dame losses or acting like they been horrible for years. This thread is perfect example of that. So at times they may be over ranked, but at the same time responses after losses are also usually over exaggerated
