B-Ball-fan
It was senior night for the Holmes Bulldogs as they were looking for an opportunity to end their 10 game losing streak, and develop some momentum as they head into district tournament play next week. The Bulldogs started 5 seniors, and the Walton Verona Bearcats thought to take advantage of this and jumped out to a 14-6 lead before Coach Brad Carr got his usual starting five in the game. The Bearcats were putting on a 3 ball clinic early on with junior Brant Smithers leading the way knocking down shot after shot, but he has a supporting cast that can also shoot the lights out too. The tempo of the game was fast paced, and the Bulldogs held their own cutting that initial 8 point lead to 4 before the end of the 1st quarter with Walton in the lead 33-29. The 2nd quarter remained exciting with both teams getting at it, and the Bulldogs themselves were putting on a clinic of their own in blocked shots. Jonathan Meyer was knocking down his 3’s for the Bulldogs, Eian Elmer was playing the man, and impressed with some monster dunks. Quantez Calloway was in high form tonight to playing strong around the rim. By halftime it was all knotted up at 44, The 3rd period saw the Bulldogs increase the pressure and effectively defending the 3 ball better than they had in the 1st half, and cashed in extending the lead, and by the end of the 3rd quarter the Dawgs were up by 9, 65-56. Holmes went cold at the beginning of the 4th quarter allowing the Bearcats to get back in it, as they got as close as 2, but the Bulldogs stayed true and finally got the finish that has been eluding them much of the season winning 85-76. Good time for them to be playing strong and gaining momentum because it doesn’t get any easier for them as they play Highlands Tuesday night, and will face Covington Catholic next week in the first round of the 35th district at Holmes. 2
