Holding a full region tournament in which all teams participated would be complicated. First, playing at a neutral site is unlikely because of crowds. Second, seeding would be problematic because many schools don't play each other. Third, you could use the RPI but it is already a flawed instrument and will likely be even more so this season when many games will likely be canceled due to the virus/red zone restrictions, etc.

Because of all of that, I would be surprised if the district tournaments are eliminated. However, I could see a situation in which the district champion is the only participant in the region tournament. The last (and maybe only) time that happened was during the World War II travel restrictions in 1943.

Any mention, discussion, and media regarding politics or political figures is expressly prohibited on BluegrassPreps. Keeping in mind BGP's core purpose as a sports-discussion community, discussion of the the managing bodies specifically serving over high school, college, amateur, and professional sports leagues (KHSAA, NCAA, IOC, MLB, MLS, NBA, NFL et al), along with the officers, officials and the titles held by the individuals within those organizations is permitted on BGP. Similarly, high school and college/university administrators and officials, when discussed in a strictly non-political manner, are all permissible on BGP.

So how do we account for the fact that four regions have 15 teams while the 9th has 20? Does the 9th have to sacrifice games? The 1st-3rd and 14th Regions all get 16 additional games to prepare for the tournament while, as bulldog mentioned, CovCath is running through Division 3 of the 9th with only 11 "prep" games? All in the name of the All-Region Team?

Obviously, I'm thinking of a normal season where COVID isn't a factor(though who knows when we'll get one of those again) and teams have a 30-game schedule. And what happens to the All-A schools who have a midseason tournament to account for? 

Lots of money talk and discussion of revenue right now, about an hour into the meeting. A couple of notes from what's been said:

-The KHSAA's annual revenue is 60% from their tournaments.
-The KHSAA got rid of $100K in part-time staffers immediately after cancelling the 2019 Sweet 16. They are looking at further downsizing as a result of reduced revenue.
-Schools participating in state championships/Sweet 16 will likely not receive any expense money from the KHSAA, as they usually do.

@Mustang, didn't you tell me that the BOC meeting on November 18th was supposed to be Mike Clines' last Board Of Control meeting? Clines is sitting in on the meeting again today, and he hasn't been an employee of the Diocese of Covington since like September.

I realize he was elected by the private schools in regions 9-16 their one representative to the BOC, but if he is no longer employed by any of those school districts, is it right that Clines is sitting in as a voting member on the BOC?

Tackett said they appreciate all of the input and suggestions they have received for changes and alternate schedules for basketball, but a lot of what is driving the tournament dates for the Sweet 16 is a long-term contract that the KHSAA has signed with Rupp. The tournament has to be held at Rupp, and they have to deal with Rupp's availability. Rupp is unavailable March 23-28 because of Comic-Con, March 27 & 28 because of Winter Jam, April 9-11 because of a monster truck show, and April 12-19 because of Disney On Ice.

Julian's response to board member Darrell Billings saying it's "imperative" to get a date set for the Sweet 16:

"On the state tournament, I'm not going to beat around the bush. We need to have it as late as we possibly can for the best opportunity for success given the facts we know now. That's why the recommendation is that we hold it later in the spring."

That is exactly what Commissioner Tackett was trying to get across to everyone in the last meeting.

I agree, make it all as late as possible this year, that definitely gives us all the best chance for success.

I am very, very cognizant of all the implications / complications / consequences / ad infinitum of these discussions.   Every time you move one domino, another falls - and another, and another.   Far more people than just the "basketball people" will be impacted by the final decision, whatever it is.

But the reality is we've made it through big changes - temporary and permanent - before.   We'll "get through" again.   We just have to be flexible and appreciate what we have....
