The Covington Catholic Colonels are 7-0 after a 38-3 waltz through Independence on Friday night, and will be headed down to Clays Mill Road in Lexington to take on the 4-2 Lexington Catholic Knights in the final game of the 2020 regular season. Lex Cath lost 23-20 to Lexington Christian in Week 1, and then lost three weeks later to Boyle County in a 40-0 shutout.

Obviously those who are close to the two programs will recall the barn-burner of a second half in the regular season match up between these two teams last year. The Colonels came from behind to win 39-38 over the Knights in a game that boasted two of the top Mr. Football candidates for the season in Michael Mayer and Beau Allen. Both teams are obviously significantly changed in the absence of their senior stars from the 2019 season and the presence of a new cast of starters. But which team's 2020 formula is the right one to pull out the win on Friday?

PrepSpin is going to have their streaming broadcast of the game, as usual.

  • The video is amazing and I enjoy listening to the announcers as "entertainers" but that is about where it ends.

He probably got tired of having to make the tackle!

Obviously there has been a lot of roster turnover, but this is a revenge game for the Cov Cath defense, and specifically the secondary, after getting lit on fire by Beau Allen last year.

I don’t know a lot about LC, but Cov Cath has been playing really well the last few weeks and I expect them to win by a couple td’s.

The big thing I’m looking for is continued growth in the passing game for the Colonels.

I say CovCath by 4 td’s. Our defense is pretty good plus they don’t have Beau Allen to throw for 450 yards like he did last year. Plus that game last year was early in the year and the CCH secondary was young and inexperienced. We have 7 games under our belt and getting better each week on both sides of the ball. I say CCH 35-7.

I would think this could be a running clock.

PrepSpin always does a great job, I'm looking forward to this one.

No question the lack of Beau Allen completely changes the team. They are still a 40/60 run-to-pass offense this year, though (last year they were almost 20/80). One thing I've noticed in multiple games is that Cov Cath's defense ends up on their heels when they aren't collapsing pockets on quarterbacks. The Colonel defensive backs lack a bit when it comes to speed, and there is frequently at least one open receiver on pass plays. The defense relies heavily on the line busting up the pocket and forcing the QB to scramble for yards or to hurry his pass into missing its mark. That was a major problem against Beechwood and Hergott, who works exceptionally well under pressure. It was also one of the big problems against Dixie. There were some instances of the Cov Cath defense being put back on its heels by Simon Kenton last week when the Pioneers were able to give Crone enough time to hit one of his open receivers for multiple plays, but the Cov Cath defensive line was able to come through enough to stop the threats.

One thing worth noting is that the Lex Cath offense has 5 of their top 7 receivers back from last year in Jackson Corbett, Blake Busson, Jack Monday, Dylan Bracken, and JD Woodall. Jack Gohmann was one of those 7 top receivers, but he has moved over to starting QB for the Knights this year as a junior.

The CovCath defense was without Wilson in the Beechwood and Dixie games and was also breaking in 10 new starters .The over all defensive play has improved greatly with getting everybody playing and with players settling into roles. I'm looking forward to seeing what the LexCath offense can do against the Colonel defense.

Oh, no doubt that it's a different defense at this point for Cov Cath. I'm just trying to look back at things that have been problems for us previously, and where Lex Cath is probably going to be trying to figure out to exploit.
