The forces of good and evil have been waging a tug of war for as long as mankind has existed. The battle for the soul of Owensboro football isn't quite that dramatic and hasn't been fought for nearly as long, but the Catholics and Devils have engaged in a spirited conflict for gridiron supremacy for decades. The two sides have alternated wins in the last four years, with the series ebbing and flowing since the late 90s.

The momentum of the rivalry may be on the verge of swinging back in Owensboro's favor. They ran the clock on OCath last year, and most of the Red Devils' playmakers from that game are back.

Both teams stand at 4-0, with dominant displays in Week 4. Owensboro blew out Muhlenberg County 55-0, while OCath exacted a measure of revenge on McLean County, 37-0. The teams' combined 8-0 record represents the best such mark between the two schools entering this contest since at least 1997 (as far back as KHSAA records show).

Will Owensboro Senior assert itself again this year, or will the Aces continue the recent trend in the series and stun the favored Red Devils?

OCath surprised me last week with a big win over McLean.

I agree @teeroy, I thought McLean had their number again, but the Aces proved me wrong.

But this matchup is in different area codes IMO.  Too much everything for the Red Devils.

And I'm calling running clock as well.

OCath is always well prepared and they are always a good team.  They will not beat theirself.  They have a tremendous WR in Mundy, who I think had 4 TD's in the McClean game.  If it's the Mundy family I think it is, most of his family has always played at Owensboro Senior.  He had a good game last year with 6 catches for 59 yards.  Catholic had a great QB in Hartz and 3 good WR's in Edge, Thruston and Mundy.  They didn't do very much last year, but that was in large part to the tremendous defense OHS had.  Hartz had no time.  OHS' defense THIS YEAR is coming along, but it not as senior dominant as last year, with a dominant 3-man rush.  I think Catholic will have more time to throw, although I haven't seen this new QB (Clancy).  Boarman looks to be playing both ways (RB and LB) and he is a load.  Catholic is much more balanced running/passing this year so far, but they haven't played a team with as much firepower as Owensboro.

Owensboro starts 4 WR's in Tinsley, Flaherty, Rogers and Stevenson who are all speedy.  IMO, OHS has SEVERAL other kids that could be starting WR's for most teams in Early, Pendleton (6'4 young man playing defense), Nick Avery (started WR for Evansville Castle last year now playing LB), etc.  Dealing with Wimsatt is just extremely difficult.  He can throw it 60 yards, or he can take off at any time.  I think Carbon as the backup RB is legit as well.  Avery is the senior, but Carbon has looked very good in limited carries.  OHS' short-yardage lineup is tough too:  Gough at FB, Avery as HB and a 3rd back in Stevenson.  Gough has just run over everyone when he touches the ball

The only way it's close is if multiple turnovers by Senior High.  I think OHS has punted 1 time this year and the offense is their strength.

OHS 42-21

Nice summary, Brown.

And to the OP's comment about best combined record for a long while.  That is simply because they usually play first couple games of the year (game 2 or game 3 the last 20 years).

I’m also going with the Red Devils with a running clock.

I think Owensboro wins 35-21.

A good story in the owensboro times this morning on this game and rivalry.

I believe the OCath Sports Net guys switched from the Mixlr format to the Facebook live stream this year.  Not 100% sure but i think that is how I understood it.

I know Vic Evans will have the call with KSR's Nick Roush tonight as well.  Link to listen:  https://www.owensbororadio.com/player/?playerID=603/

I will be interested to see how Gavin performs with the bright lights on him tonight.  Its impossible to look at his statistics and see the talent that he has.  I think he is in store for a big time game tonight if Catholic can keep it close enough to keep him on the field for more than a half.  The Aces have been a big surprise to me this year.  They haven't played the toughest schedule but wins over Mt Vernon Indiana and then last weeks domination of Mclean were impressive.  Catholic has won the last 2 meetings at Steele Stadium but I think the Devils speed will be too much for them tonight.

Owensboro 49 - Catholic 28
