Owensboro 55 Muhlenberg County 0

Featured Replies

It’s a shame that Owensboro has to play District teams Ohio, Grayson, Muhlenburg and Breck County.  Graves is a good team, but Owensboro needs South Warren, BG or Christian County in their district too In exchange for one of those teams.

I'd guess the districts were divided like they are for a reason. If you put Owensboro and one of the Warren County teams in District 1, you might have seen numerous teams jump to 6A. Instead, they put the county schools with Owensboro (only one tough game, guys!) and the three Warren schools and Christian County together. They knew Bowling Green, Greenwood, and South Warren would stay together and that Christian County wouldn't shy away from any opponent. (Barren was initially in but asked to move up to 6A - proving my point).

That's just me thinking out loud. But you're right, five required district games and three county games (Apollo, Daviess, O-Cath) doesn't leave much space on the schedule.

These are well said and great insight from GC!

Owensboro is done no favors with this schedule IMO.  Yes, they are in the Semifinals every year, but I think they are so at a complete disadvantage as the team they are facing almost assuredly has played a harder schedule and thus more ready for that game.

To GCs point, I don't think they fix that and leave it where it is honestly.

I REALLY miss the Owensboro game during the regular season.  It's always a measuring stick game, which I think both need.  But I have noticed that this year and it could be Covid, BG isn't playing O in lower tier level games either, which is not good for either IMO.  It is those games that people look forward to and actually go to.  Cutting those games not only effects the teams schedule, it cuts interest in the sport IMO.

Oh well, good luck to both!

Christian County should be in district 1 in 5A. Makes no sense that some of these county schools in district 1 currently have to pass through Christian County to get to some of their district games.

If classes were cut to 5 then we wouldn’t have this problem but that’s another topic.

Owensboro loves a good schedule.  Owensboro stayed with BG during its dominant years, when really the Purples could claim to have been the top program or close to it in the 2010 decade.  Owensboro always (until CoVid) plays a top notch Indiana team.  2018 and 2019 were Evansville Reitz and Evansville Central - 2 great programs in Indiana.  In 2018 Owensboro had a solid schedule that wasn't limited by a terrible district:

Madisonville North Hopkins (miss that rivalry)

Evansville Reitz

Bowling Green (twice if you count playoffs)

Christian County

Graves County

Henderson (very old tradition game - and usually a big athletic 6A school)

Losing Christian County in its district stinks, but really adding 6 teams in District 1 is a killer, especially when the only game is Graves.  This year Owensboro had Purdue QB signee Brady Allen (Gibson Southern) which was poised to be a great game (CoVid cancellation).  However the 5 game district schedule is a killer, especially since 1757 they play all 3 other city/county teams.  Please move South Warren, Bowling Green or Christian County into our district.  I'd rather have SW or BG to be honest.

All true!  The down-trending schedule is directly tied to the large district mandated schedule and your 3 local games, all which I get.  But honestly the local games right now don't do anything for Owensboro other than pride in the grocery store.

If you could go with the local schools on a 2 teams on 1 team off strategy where you kept 2 on for a 2 year cycle and at the end of the 2 year cycle you add the one that was out back in and kick another out for 2 years would be beneficial.  With that extra game you could schedule an upper level team like BG or South Warren.  Honestly, I think Owensboro is ready to take on a big Jefferson County team.  If they add that to their schedule, I see them as a top contender (they still are now, but you have to question how they will respond in 4th quarter game now).

Without this top notch game during the season, makes it touch adjusting on the fly deep in the playoffs when you haven't had to do that all year.  This current Owensboro team is no joke and can and will make some noise.  I just wonder when you finally get a tight game.

Back to the topic - Wimsatt looks phenomenal - much better this year with the short and intermediate throws.  Granted OHS hasn't faced a Bowling Green or Freddy D Defense yet.  Graves and Henderson will be better tests, but offensively OHS has looked great.  Not many yards to be had last night because OHS started on Muhlenburg side of the field almost every time.  OHS is really missing that opening game with Gibson Southern (IN) that would have helped alot face a really good team.  Defense is coming along - alot of fresh faces getting reps.  Lot of speed on that side of the ball as well.  Rogers got his first TD last night, he's a super-soph IMHO.

I agree Purple88!  I would dump ALL city/county teams next year.  They have to quit worrying about being City/County Champs for the 151st time.  I would also dump Henderson, but they won't.  Henderson is actually a good game, because they slow it down, play dirty (in a good way) and it's a slugfest that gets the Devils ready for the playoffs.  With Wimsatt as a Senior next year, I would love to see a CovCath/Freddy D type game, get the Purples back on the schedule and keep the top notch southern indiana (like the most recent 3:  Gibson Southern/Evansville Central/Evansville Reitz).  Owensboro will be confident in the playoffs as they have great leadership.  Again, I hope BG and the Devils meet in the finals!

Good take.

I love all this!!!  And its a great time to do it.  Only thing is you would get push back in the community by cutting off all those local games.  Not sure O has the stomach for that politically.  But if they did do that, I would say Owensboro is in the State Championship game next season.  And next year would be a good year to catch BG as they primary offensive players are all seniors this year.  More coming but they are young.

If I'm not mistaken, the Evansville/Southern Indiana teams have realigned their conference and now aren't playing anyone but conference games. That means zero top-tier opponents from Indiana for schools like Henderson County and Owensboro who used to play at least two each year.

Is this a yearly thing for the Indiana schools now, or just this year, due to Covid?

I think it’s permanent. I’m guessing a couple schools have grown and were added to the conference. I read that somewhere but can’t remember or I’d post the link.

Owensboro would have been better served to drop those City/County games this season with no fans.  Its a little harder to dump them when they are your biggest gates.  That said, Catholic would be the only home game for the Devils in 2021, so a 1-2 season break from the city/county schedule does make some sense in the coming seasons.  I think it would make more sense for Owensboro to drop Henderson than it would to drop and city game.  I know its a long standing rivalry, but it seems pretty watered down these days.  You could keep the district schedule, city/county and then have 2 games to schedule big time competition like St X or Trinity and a big time Indiana opponent.

I've always been puzzled at why the KHSAA didn't put Grayson County in the Bowling Green district?  Seems more logical to have them make that a 5 team district instead of the current format with 6 and 4.
