Tubbys 98 Championship Team?

Featured Replies

Pitino won one title and had an injury possibly keep him from a second. Tubby has won one title and had an injury possibly keep him from a second. Even. Question for speculation is even though he may not have won the title in 98, would he have won more that one over that time?
Good question. Maybe one more.

The thing people forget is that the national title is not based on who is the best team, rather a team that has the best matchups and is able to win and survive in a one and done elimination tournament. The '98 team had the gift of only having to play one number one seed in the tournament; which I feel best suited UK because they (Duke) were inexperienced. Titles are really hard to come by. UConn is the only team since '98 to win multiple national titles if that tells you anything. The level the program was at was going to be tough to sustain. Even then, it was not as if all three teams were as dominating as the '96 team. The '97 team was the last #1 seed (Utah thought they were jobbed) and the '98 team was a #2 seed... I look at it as being similar to how Duke is right now.. and they are not hoisting the trophy every season.

'Zona: Probably thinking of Dickerson on the perimiter. Who was the shot blocker on the interior??? Bramlett? Why is that name in my head, lol?

UNC: Carter and Jamison were All-Americans

Duke: Also had Wojo and Battier. Talented, but young.

That was a stupid question on who the other #1 was. It was Kansas. Heck, I watched them play out in Oklahoma City first round of the tourney against Prarie View. They lost second round to Tyson Chandler, Cutino Mobley, et. al of Rhode Island.

Arizona had AJ Bramlett and Bennett Davidson on the interior that year.

It might have been Purdue was the other #1 seed. (Or maybe Kansas?) Of the kids on that team only 3 can I say had good to decent NBA careers: Magloire, Padgett and Mohammad. (I feel I'm stretching it with the descriptions of their careers with those words) Shepherd made it as a free agent I think and the same was for Turner but neither lasted long. Of the other 2 remember Magloire was only a Sophomore and he was there for shot blocking and defense.

The other top teams had:

Arizona: Miles Simon (NBA bust), Mike Bibby and there was one other swingman.

UNC: Vince Carter, Antwan Jamison were the standouts.

Duke: Youthful Brand, Maggette, Avery, Trajan Langdon.

If memory serves Kansas may have still had Paul Pierce at that point.

There were a lot more talented teams but none that played better as a team than the '98 squad.

Duke didn't have Maggette. He left after his freshman year of 98-99.

I thought that team lead by Bogans and Hayes, Fitch, Daniels, ect. was incredible. Bogans getting hurt I thought took that team out of a rhythm at the begining of the Elite 8 game. And who would have thought that Dwayne Wade would have started to become a ledgend that game. I had seen Wade play 10-12 times early that year, and knew he was legit, but that night he played like he did in the NBA Finals. You also had one of Marquettes forwards (Novak maybe) hit 3 or 4 threes that game, while having hit only 2 in his career before hand. No team was beating Marquette that night.

Novak hit 89 3's that year...

I agree so that makes Rick and Tubby even. My question is do you think Rick would have won more that one title from 98 thru 06? It is speculation but what are the thoughts?

Someone on that team surpassed thier three point total. The announcers made a big point of it during the game.

Your right, my bad. :thumb:

I was thinking of Chris Carawell.

Actually I think if Dale Brown does not go down in the '93 Semi-final then UK beats Michigan and defeats UNC the next night. Pitino was realistically there for a chance at another that year as well.

Fine. Do you think he would have won more than one title from 98 to the present?

Fine. Do you think he would have won more than one title from 98 to the present?

Who knows? I would say he would have won in this fantasy situation as he won in reality.

Since Coach K has only won ONE championship in the past 15 years, I am going out on a limb and say it is very hard to win national championships and one for Pitino from 96 to 06 wouldn't be a stretch. Unless you consider him a much better coach than Coach K.

Funny that Coach K who can do know wrong has the same number of championships since 1998 as Tubby.

How about this, is one national title every 10 years good enough at UK?

The only reason I said that about Tubby winning in 97 is simply because I get so sick of hearing that the only reason Tubby won in 98 is because it was Ricks Players! Most of the people that say that just can't get over Ricky P!

I'll say this, both the 96 and 97 UK teams that Pitino coached had more talent than the 98 team, coached by Tubby...if I'm not mistaken, the Cats were ranked in the low teens in the preseason polls and that was mainly on name alone and what the teams the 2 prior years had done...I don't think anyone trully thought the 98 team had the talent to win it all. With that said, I give all the credit to Tubby and his coaching ability...I'm not saying Pitino left the cupboard bare, but, it wasn't near the level of the 2 previous teams...

Well, considering UK averages one every 15 seasons or so, I guess 1 out of 10 is not that bad (which is second best as far as averaging a titles between seasons).

If Derek Anderson would have not got hurt, UK would have won 3 in a row.

I agree.
