Cleveland is the only franchise that is currently looking to hire a HC. It looks like they have their pick of the remaining candidates and can take their time... meaning they can interview as many as they want. Perhaps they will get it right this time.

I guess that's one way of looking at it. The flip side is there's been numerous candidates mentioned, and several have already chosen to go elsewhere.

 

The good news, if I were a Browns fan, would be that if Cleveland is targeting someone on the staff of a team still playing...you won't have to "outbid" another team to get your guy, since all the other vacancies have been filled.

The reason I say what I said in post #31 is that there are some really good and serious candidates left. One I haven't mentioned much is Eric Bieniemy, OC from the Chiefs. What I have been reading is that he WILL be a Head Coach in the NFL. He's just looking for that first opportunity.

 

He's done well as KC's OC and had a significant role in developing Patrick Mahomes into something pretty special. He comes from the Andy Reid coaching tree that has done pretty well in producing successful Head Coaches.

 

So, it's the caliber of guys who remain as candidates that makes me optimistic that Cleveland can get it right this year if they do their due diligence. Without competition right now, they have the luxury to turn over every rock before making their decision.

I personally think Bieniemy would be the best hire for Cleveland. I really wanted him in Cincinnati. I'm not saying Baker will ever be on the level of Mahomes, but I would love to see what he could do in an offense like Bieniemy's with the weapons that he has.

I know this would NEVER happen, but I wish Bill Cowher would come out of retirement and coach the Browns. He is the kind of coach they need, and it would drive Steeler fans nuts!

Bieniemy eventually will get a chance and may do very well. With that said there has been a lot of talk about the lack of experience Zac Taylor and Kitchens had with calling plays when they were hired last year. Bieniemy actually has less experience than they even had calling plays. He doesn’t call the play for the Chiefs, Andy Reid does.

My statement wasn't a shot at Taylor, I don't think he has had nearly enough time for me to make a judgement on him as a HC (though I do wonder why he drafted a TE in the 2nd round if his offense isn't going to use the TE). By all accounts he has control of the locker room and the respect of the players (Kitchens not so much). I believe that if (big if) the Brown family allows him to succeed, he will. I was merely stating who my preference was before we hired Taylor.

I never said it was a shot at him. I know many have complained about his lack of experience calling plays before they even hired him. Which it did show this year. I’m just pointing out that technically Bienemy has even less experience calling plays. He may be the OC, but he is not the one calling plays.

Bieniemy doesn't call plays in KC. So is it his offense or Reids?

If Mike Brown was never the owner of the Bengals in the 90s, and didn't take over until 2003 as owner. I think people would think a lot differently of him as an owner. Problem is the 90's did happen with him as the owner, and people won't ever forget that and that is what people always fall back on.

They have had more starting QB's that I can even count, and Hue Jackson who went winless one year, and only won one game the other year was their longest tenure coach. They did all this while having different GM's, which also shows just by hiring a GM means very little in terms of success.

I believe they have had 30. By contrast, the Patriots have had 5. Also, you really don't like the idea of a GM do you?
