Browns Head Coach Search

Vikings Assistant GM George Paton has taken himself out of the running for the Brown's GM position. There were some things he didn't like about the structure, though he was very much interested in working with new HC Kevin Stefanski. He has a really good situation in Minnesota and is a much sought-after GM candidate. Several teams have tried to lure him away from the Vikings with no success yet.

What was it about the structure that Paton didn't like. There is no clear indication of exactly what it was but it could be that the HC, the GM, and the Chief strategy officer are all on the same rung of the ladder, reporting directly to Jimmy Haslem. Maybe Paton wanted more control than that and thinks he can get it with a different team next season.

Andrew Berry of the Eagles is reportedly the Browns next target for the position. He would fit well with Stefanski and DePodesta.

And the new GM is Andrew Berry from the Eagles. Berry, 32, will be the youngest GM in the league. Berry was hired by the Colts in the scout room after his playing and academic career at Harvard. He then was VP of Player Personnel with the Browns in 2016-18. Went to the Eagles for one year as VP of Football Operations and is now back with the Browns. Former Colt Executive, Bill Polian, raved about Berry and was certain he would go far in the league.

His hire gives the Browns the alignment Haslem has been looking for. By alignment, he means guys who approach the game in the same way, appreciating analytics and how to use it to enhance their decision-making process. DePodesta Chief Strategy Officer (and chief analytics guru) Paul DePodesta and Berry are Harvard grads while HC Kevin Stefanski is a Penn grad. Three Ivy-leaguers are in charge at Cleveland. Apparently, while Berry was with Cleveland in 2018, he and DePodesta favored hiring Stefanski over Kitchens. Dorsey overruled them. Now with Dorsey gone DePodesta and Stefanski liked bringing Berry back to Cleveland. We'll get to see how well they can work as a team after all. Hopefully, this will go well and with Berry at 32, and Stefanski at 37, they could have a long time to see just how far they can take this. That is, if Haslem can practice a bit of patience as they learn on the job.
