Browns Head Coach Search

College coaches, with no NFL experience, have very seldom had success at the pro level. It's an entirely different game.

Which is why I said why lol. I don’t want them to have success. That is why I would be fine if they hired him.

With McCarthy going to Dallas, I'm thinking McDaniels will be at Cleveland.

It doesn't make any difference. As long as the Haslem's own that football team, nothing will change.I've been beaten down to the point that ,"I DON'T CARE"!!!

Bring on baseball season!

I think McDaniels and Stefanski are their top choices. I'm not sure how interested they were in McCarthy. They could have had him last year and he was not in the top two or three choices then.

Kevin Stefanski has no head coaching experience. (Kitchens II?)

I don't know why Josh McDaniels is always the flavor of the month. He failed miserably in his lone head coaching gig in Denver (Started out 6-0 then went 5-17 before being fired before the end of his second season.), and Bilichek's assistants have not fared that well as head coaches. Cleveland should know the latter, they've already had 2 of them, Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini.

It makes one wonder how the wheels work.

Panthers hire Baylor HC Matt Rhule.

That makes it more likely that the Browns will have a shot at Josh McDaniels, who interviews with the Giants Wednesday and the Browns on Friday (assuming the Giants don't hire him) or Vikings OC Kevin Stefanski.

The Giants also intend to interview fired Cowboys coach, Jason Garrett.

Stefanski was a finalist for the Browns job last year as he "blew away" everyone in the building with his interview last year. The problem is, John Dorsey preferred Kitchens. Now Dorsey and Kitchens are gone and Depodesta is left to influence the owners. Depodesta, reportedly, preferred Stefanski last season but ownership went with Dorsey's recommendation.

Point taken regarding Belichick's assistants.

Regarding Head Coaching experience. The difference between Kitchens hire and someone like Josh McDaniels or Kevin Stefanski is that Kitchens was a position coach. He had zero experience as a coordinator until half-way through the 2018 season when he went from quarterbacks coach to Offensive Coordinator in game 8. When the off season arrived and the Browns needed to hire a Head Coach, they hired Kitchens.

He had lots of experience in the NFL, but only half a season as an OC. That was a rapid promotion that isn't often seen. This is unlike any of the coaches the Browns are currently looking at. All of them have ample experience as coordinators, including the two you name, Stefanski and McDaniel.

In that sense, it is not Kitchens 2.0.

I wouldn’t really say Stefanski has ample experience as a coordinator. He like Kitchens took over in the middle of the 2018 season calling plays. This is his first full year calling plays. Him and Kitchens at the end of this season both now have the exact same experience calling plays. So technically they could have the same experience in calling plays just by bringing Kitchens back.

oldgrappler, How about the Browns hire Brian Schottenheimer as HC, and have Marty be the GM?

If only Marty could do that. I love Marty Schottenheimer. Sad story. Marty has Alzheimer's.

You are right. My source was in error. I knew I should have checked out my wife's story.

I don't think the Browns are interested in Urban Meyer and I doubt they were interested in the Baylor coach, contrary to some reports.

Haslem gave a press conference and he was asked about Urban Meyer. He said something like, "Right now we are just focusing on people with NFL experience."

These are the characteristics they are looking for in a Head Coach:

1. Strong leader. The players told him they want a strong leader.

2. Smart.

3. Good football acumen.

4. Will work within the organization for the best result. Not someone who says, "It's my way or the highway." That rules out Belichick, Paul Brown and Vince Lombardi.

5. A continuous learner.

6. A CEO Coach who can manage all the demands of the position and not a glorified coordinator. I guess he learned from the Kitchens hire.

In addition, Haslem said he will hire the coach first and give him a say in who the GM will be. The Head Coach will not solely pick the GM but it will be a collaborative decision with ownership, Dipodesta (head of football operations and an analytics guy), and the Head Coach. He recognizes the importance of the GM and HC relationship.

When asked what confidence the fans can have that he'll get it right this time, Haslem replied, "Let's be honest, there are no guarantees." He went on to give the above criteria.

They are busy interviewing a slew of candidates who seem to be interested in the job. McDaniels may be interviewed on Jan. 10.

Hopefully, having to eat crow this season has tempered a lot of that out of them.

Probably not. Egos bigger than Lake Erie.

My initial post was said somewhat in jest, but didn't know about Marty's current situation. Hate to hear that.
