That is misleading. If we look at starting quarterbacks and eliminate starters due to injury, the Bengals have really had only 3 starting quarterbacks since 2001 - Kitna, Palmer and Dalton.

I believe they have had 30. By contrast, the Patriots have had 5. Also, you really don't like the idea of a GM do you?

 

I definitely wouldn’t mind having a GM to have another football person in there. With that said it seems so many people are convinced that well if Mike Brown would just get a GM everything would be great. That simply is not true at all.

Josh McDaniels was interviewed for 7 hours today. He left town with no announcement. The Browns decision makers are huddling in Cleveland, hopefully, coming to a consensus. It is expected that they will make a final decision this weekend, though the announcement may need to wait until their guy is done for the season. McDaniels was the last of the 8 candidates to be interviewed. Only one, Mike McCarthy, is unavailable because he was hired by another team.

Cleveland.com reporter, Mary Kay Cabot revealed that the Browns have asked permission to talk to Colts Assistant GM, Ed Dodds. It is believed that the 49ers DC, Robert Saleh, mentioned Dodds as a possible GM to pair with him when Saleh interviewed for the Browns Head Coach position. Dodds is widely touted as an up and coming GM. This would indicate that Saleh is among the finalists for the HC position.

 

However, the Browns have also looked into the Bills Assistant GM, Joe Schoen, as someone they would pair with Bills OC, Brian Daboll, who is one of the 8 candidates interviewed for the HC job.

 

I don't know what all of this means except that it appears the Browns are being very deliberate and intentional in filling these two key positions. The Vikings Kevin Stefanski is also still a serious contender. It is reported that he was DePodesta's choice last year when Dorsey was in charge of the search and chose Kitchens. DePodesta is in charge of the search this time, though he has less power to make the decision than Dorsey did last year. It is believed that the Browns would talk to the Eagles' VP of Football Operations Andrew Berry, who was formerly the Browns VP of Player Personnel, as the GM candidate to pair with Stefanski if the latter is chosen as HC. This would bring three guys together who rely a lot on analytics. Another point of affinity between DePodesta and Stefanski, they both are Ivy Leaguers, Stefanski from Penn and DePodesta from Harvard.

 

It appears the Browns have some really good options and are weighing all the pros and cons of each candidate. Even so, there are no guarantees that someone will have success at the next level on the hierarchical chart. And, one never knows if someone whose had success or failure as a Head Coach for another team will be successful in the next venture.

 

As a Browns fan, I want them to get it right sooooo badly. :confused:

I am happy with this choice by the Browns. I think they got their man. I believe he was their top choice all along. They passed on Mike McCarthy last year and I don't think he was among their top choices this year. They liked Stefanski last season but he had only called plays for three games at that time and Dorsey preferred Kitchens. DePodesta got his man this time. Let's see if they bring Andrew Berry over from the Eagles as the new GM.

Good hire. Whether he can turn around the worst franchise in the NFL since they came back in the league remains to be seen. He has his work cut out for him

The honestly would be a great hire. I wouldn’t mind having Hue back here as OC. He is probably not getting another Head Coaching job again unless he goes to college. So a head coach wouldn’t have to worry about losing his OC if they do well with Hue.

In the Bengals coaching search thread in December 2018. Stefanski was one of the first guys I mentioned I would be interested in the Bengals getting as their Head Coach. Hopefully though I was wrong about him and he doesn’t help Cleveland at all lol.

It doesn't matter. Bring him to Cleveland and let him do the same thing here. After all, it's warmer in Cleveland.

If he likes his current position with the Vikings then why leave? If he wants a step up in responsibility he probably would be handed the OC job with the Vikings if he wants it. So if he wants a step up in responsibility he can do that with the Vikings, or if he likes not having a demanding job he already has that. Not to mention isn’t his son a member of the staff with the Vikings?

 

I agree he would be a great addition for the Browns, but I would be shocked if he even considered it.

I was listening to a Cleveland area sports podcast today that was interviewing Andrew Kramer who is a Vikings beat writer. Kramer said that Gary Kubiak went to the Vikings because Kevin Stefanski became the OC, not because of Mike Zimmer or anyone else. They met years before through Kubiak’s son, Klint, who was an assistant with the Vikings. Gary Kubiak was eager to mentor Stefanski because he knew Kevin would listen, learn, and gain from Kubiak’s experience and knowledge.

 

Kramer went on to say that he heard Stefanski wanted to bring Gary Kubiak over to Cleveland as OC but that Zimmer would make that very difficult. So, Kramer said he doesn’t see Gary Kubiak going to Cleveland because Zimmer wouldn’t allow it. However, he speculated that Klint Kubiak may go to Cleveland to work with Stefanski and a couple other Vikings assistants would find their way there too. Who knows, if Klint Kubiak is made the OC, maybe Gary will come along as an assistant to his son much like he was to Stefanski in 2019 with the Vikings.

Vikings Assistant GM George Paton is in Cleveland for a second interview for the GM job at Cleveland. He worked with new Head Coach Kevin Stefanski for 13 years in Minnesota. Assuming Paton can gel with Chief Strategy Officer, Paul DePodesta, hiring Paton would give Haslem the alignment he cited as a primary criteria for his hires for HC and GM. Andrew Berry of the Eagles is also a finalist for the GM position but I assume Stefanski would prefer Paton.

 

It is also believed that the Browns will hire 49ers DB coach and Passing Game Coordinator, Joe Woods, as the new Defensive Coordinator after the Super Bowl.
