...in the final BCS coaches poll?

I say without a doubt yes he should have. He participated in the process every other week (when the votes were secret by the way), he had a responsibility to vote the final week and in the full view of everyone. This sets a nasty precedent. How many coaches will opt out of the public ballot next year? And for that matter why aren't ALL ballots public in the first place? Continues to show how big of a farce the whole BCS process is.

Something needs to be done about coaches voting. Urban Meyer himself stated he had only watched tOSU play one time all season but knew enough about them to vote them #1. I am not being critical of Meyer, he probably watched as much college football as the next coach. But there is no way these guys can make a legitimate decision each week without being able to watch any of these teams; they are too busy with their own teams.

Whether or not they SHOULD vote is for a different question, IMHO, he was obligated to cast a vote and was dead wrong to abstain. Now, if he wanted to prove a point, vote Boise St. #2, but to abstain was wrong.

By the way, this was the first time in 20 years that any coach has abstained in any poll. That says something.

Bad move.

100% agreed without a doubt. Joe Pa is none too happy about it as I saw on ESPN. What happens if 10 coaches, or 20 decide they don't want to vote? What then? Someone actually voted UF #1 over OSU, and another voted 1 OSU, 2 UM, 3 Wisconsin. It's a joke. I honestly feel we'd get a better represenation here on BGP. And that's saying something with all of the SEC homer's around here. From the way Joe Pa makes it sound, traditionally, in conference schools are "supposed" to support the schools in their conference, to a point obviously. Tressell sure isn't out to make friends, I can tell you that.

You read the Forde article yet? Check out what he has to say about Tressell and what some of the voters did.

That's where I got the idea for this poll. I know there are several OSU fans that read and post here and I would love to hear their spin on this. IMVHO by doing this Tressel should now be ineligible to vote in the coaches poll permanantly.

Only if it was in the guidelines given to the coaches that they have to vote. If they were told they could abstain, than why does he lose his voting privileges for following an option that was given to him?

I guess to me, sometimes "guidelines" are less important than doing what is ethically right. If the coaches in his own conference are displeased about his actions, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it wasn't the right thing to do in the world of the coaching profession. Kind of like leaving a man behind if you will.

I would say he was in a rock and a hard place.

He doesn't feel that UM was worthy of a 2nd place. So, he doesn't put them there and he is ripped by Big 10 coaches and Michigan fans.

So he lose all respect in your conference or you vote someone in the #2 spot that you don't think deserves it.

Hello rock, hello hard place, here is Jim Tressel.

It goes with the territory. He knew at the begining of the season that the final vote would be public and yet he agreed to participate in the poll.

Was he told that abstention was an option? After reading the article by Forde I have to think that this was a fairly unprecedented action.
