Worst Section of Highway

Featured Replies

Is there a worse stretch of highway for traffic than I 75 in Cincinnati inside the I 275 loop?

I know, probably yes, and I pity any person who has to drive a section of highway worse than that.

I tend to agree, but I'm also not a fan of Turnpikes such as the ones in PA and NY. Narrow lanes through mountain passes in bad weather at night is not fun.

I-40 East from Knoxville to Asheville. Worst in America. You can't convince me otherwise.

75 south in Cincinnati, from Mitchell Ave. to the Brent Spence, is way worse than either direction in NKY will ever be. Made doubly so by the fact that the road is perpetually uneven, being worked on, and has the bottle-neck down to two lanes starting at Western Ave. in order to head south across the Brent Spence Bridge.

Literally my FAVORITE stretch of highway in this part of the country. So much fun, so beautiful, and a blast to drive.

Now I've heard horror stories about traffic jams there, but knock on wood, I've never had to sit in one.

I despise that section, complete white knuckle. Earlier this year we left Asheville during a very heavy rainfall. It was an absolute nightmare, we narrowly abide being brush by a semi.

That is the section of highway that I'm talking about in the original post. I'm including that whole section from northern Kentucky to the north side of Cincinnati that is inside of I275.

In terms of traffic/congestion? Or maintenance?

Here is confirmation that in this case perception is reality. I found this report from the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) listing the worst bottlenecks in the US highway system.

Drove it in the pouring rain last summer. At least it wasn’t dark.

One of the worst traffic jams I’ve ever been in that didn’t involve a wreck.

Along with Marietta Georgia at rush hour.

Here are your top 10:

1. Fort Lee, NJ: I 95 and SR 4

2. Atlanta: I-285 at I-85 (North)

3. Atlanta: I-75 at I-285 (North)

4. Los Angeles: SR 60 at SR 57

5. Houston: I-45 at I-69/US 59

6. Cincinnati: I-71 at I-75

7. Chicago: I-290 at I-90/I-94

8. Nashville: I-24/I-40 at I-440 (East)

9. Atlanta: I-20 at I-285 (West)

10. Los Angeles: I-710 at I-105

That is not something to be proud of Cincinnati.

That section of Nashville is no bargain at rush hour, either.
