Calipari to UCLA?

Featured Replies

Come on people...coaches aren’t going to leave the NBA, especially the best job in the NBA, to come coach at Kentucky. The ridiculousness of that is so unbelievable, yet every year we see people throw out the same names...

Good point. Has there ever been an NBA coach choose to leave an NBA team to go coach an NCAA team?

Rick Pitino.

:lol2: I hope you were being sarcastic.

Rick Pitino from the New York Knicks to the Kentucky Wildcats. 1989.:lol2:

Larry Brown from the Denver Nuggets in 1979 to UCLA.

Only way an NBA coach goes back to college (sans Rick leaving the Knicks way back when) is if the NBA coach isn't cutting it. Like Cal and Rick the second go around.

The money is totally different now.

Well Rick Pitino once left the New York Knicks to take the UK job, and that was when UK was still not even allowed in the tournament for two years. So there is that...

With that said I think out of both names Billy Donovan would be a real possibility. Billy Donovan wasn't going to leave what he built at Florida to go to a school also in the same conference in UK. It is a lot easier of a move for Billy Donovan to come to UK from the NBA though. Especially after dealing with NBA personalities like a Russell Westbrook, he very well may want back in the college environment. If Cal did leave this year I do think Billy Donovan would be a candidate they would have a true shot at.

This is always one of the glaring points of arrogance for that fan base.

Luke Walton will be UCLA's next coach and likely have a great career there.

This would surprise me because UCLA has never been one of the high paying jobs. But...stranger things can happen.

Here is my breakdown of Cal's statement:

I’m coaching at the University of Kentucky. True statement

In my opinion, there is no better job in the world to coach basketball. True statement

My plan and my desire is to retire at Kentucky. Plans and desires change

I think the university feels the same as I do and we’ve talked openly about it. I tend to believe this

Now let’s focus on this game tomorrow. He (again) has a team that is talented enough to win it all, this is a good idea

Coach Cal (true to form) has not answered the direct question, but rather diverted it. With his skillset and strengths, I do think he is the perfect person for the UK job. I do NOT think his model is one to win championships. As a general rule, experienced teams win championships and UK will never be an experienced team under Cal. If he goes to UCLA or anywhere else....fine. The next great coach at UK is......???

...not as good as Calipari.
