GRC and HC, I wouldn't say is a rival, but there is a history. Marty Joyce the OC for HC coached at GRC for 25 years, and was their OC. Will be emotinal to see him at the game this Friday. I taught with him in the same deptartment for 10 years. I am sure Marty will get a warm welcome here Friday. Great guy and coach.

Paris vs Russellville

1981- Paris won 14-0 ... over the defending state champion Panthers

1983 - Russellville won 18-7 ... stopped Paris' 38-game win streak

1984 - Paris won 7-0 ... stopped Panthers' 24-game win streak

1987 - Russellville won 24-20 ... Paris led 20-6 late into the fourth quarter

This rivalry during the playoffs was very intensed back in both teams' glory days! :scared:

Recent historian! Belfry and Russell have only met twice in the postseason, with Belfry winning 39-17 in 2004 and Russell returning the favor in 2005 by a count of 20-14. Both teams went on to win state championships.

Belfry and Russell were district rivals for many years in Class AAA, but their playoff rivalry is still very young. We could, however, be seeing a repeat this season.

The old district rivalry is what makes it a great playoff rivalry now. There is ALOT of history between the two schools.

Just wondering, but looking at a map, it looks like the best route between the schools is through West Virginia? Is that the way most travel? I think it would be quite humerous that one of the biggest rivalries around requires fans to travel most of the route through another state!

Danville Mayfield started in 1987 in the AA championship game. It was settled by a blocked extra point by Freshman David Walker for the Ads to win the first one 24-23.

1989 AA State Title game-Danville wins 7-3 on an ubelievable TD run by Donnie Redd, and a great goal line stand of 3 straight plays from the 1 in the first half.

1991 AA State Title game-Danville wins another close one 17-14 in an evenly contested match up.

1992 AA State Title Game-Danville wins 34-7 in a game that was tied 7-7 going into the fourth quarter.

Mayfield drops to A in the mid 90s and the rivalry goes on break. Since Danville dropped down in 2000 (I believe) Danville and Mayfield have met in the semi-finals every year except one (I'm pretty sure). Most of these games were settled by a touchdown or less.

Thats a great rivalry for teams that have had to win and keep playing until the semifinals or championship to even see each other. I believe that's 9 times in less than 20 years (about 5 of those they weren't even in the same class). Of course Danville has a big advantage, but most of those games could have gone either way.

Playoff rivalries usually are directly effected by classifications and changes... expect to see a lot more Russell/Belfry as both move to 3A and will now be in opposite districts, over the next few years I think it will be classified with some of the best.

Rivalries that come to mind for me over the years:

Pikeville vs. Beechwood

Trinity vs. St. X

Highlands vs. CovCath

Bowling Green vs. Hopkinsville

Danville vs. Mayfield

When it comes to Trinity in the playoffs. Yes they've had good battles with St. Xavier and Male. But I would say the many Trinity-Boone County games would count as a competitive rivalry in the playoffs just as much or even more then Male and St. Xavier.

Whole lot of research! I've went through a pretty big project a couple years ago and I've got on file scores from every playoff game in Kentucky since classification in 1959. Pretty interesting to see all the old scores.
