I feel like there is a term for this...you know, running offensive sets to give their players the opportunity to take advantage of their strengths. The word for that is escaping me. Doggone it...

It looks like Coach Ruthsatz recognized there was an issue with Cov Cath's offense, and made an adjsutment. Was not there for this game to see how it worked, but sounds like it may have.

A few days before Christmas, the Covington Catholic boys basketball team went across the river to play nationally ranked Cincinnati Moeller and lost by a whopping 20-point margin.

 

CovCath coach Scott Ruthsatz said he revamped his offensive approach after that to put his players in a position to be more successful and the Colonels opened the new year with an impressive 57-40 win at Newport on Wednesday night.

Question - Everybody knows that if a player (defender) puts two hands on an offensive player, it is a foul. What if a player is getting double teamed and each player (defender) puts one hand on the offensive player. Is it an automatic foul? A couple of times down the floor CovCath double teamed Tahj Harding and both defenders constantly had one hand on Tahj. He could hardly move. Should this have been a foul or are two defenders each allowed to put one hand on offensive player and keep him from moving freely? What's the difference between one defender using two hands and two defenders each using a hand - in each case the offensive player has two hands on him and it limits his movement.

I'm not a CovCath or Newport supporter, but was at the game. I could care less who won or by what margin. Just wanted to see a good high school b-ball game. One additional thought. CovCath definitely has player movement without the ball. However, what I thought I saw was a ton of illegal screens. CovCath would run cutters along the baseline with one player clipping \ rubbing the defender without being stationary. The offensive player would then get the ball on the block with the defender getting there late because of the illegal pick. Never saw one foul called.

I just don't think Newport ever had a shot without McGuire, then on top of that Miller misses minutes due to injury. Just too many minuses for Newport to over come.

I wold say coaching has built the talent but not an offensive system. Also we don't know what is said in the huddle or at practice. It is possible that Snapp had a gameplan and a pattern offense that the boys simply did not execute.

 

And yes, CCH is really good.

I like Newport's chances with Mcguire. An hope they meet up again in region. That big court will only help out Newport. Good win Covcath. But nothing to beat their chest over. If Newport was full strength then yes.

Absolutely. But, typically only certain teams. Hard for me to get to a lot of games each year. I think that is typical for many people. A major purpose of this forum, I would presume.

CCH is that outstanding they have depth. Newport's offense was majorly hampered without McGuire. Newport usually allows Miller to attack and then throw out to McGuire to knock down shots. They also allow Miller to attack and dump to Harding. CCH last nite doubled teamed on Harding and at times had 3 men on him when he got the ball. You play 5 starters of CCH against 5 starters of Newport and newport would win majority of the games. Cov Cath has depth on all NKy teams. They do not have the best 5 players but when Cov Cath goes to the bench they have very little dip in talent. I have watched Cov Cath 3 times this year I feel there is a few better teams than them as far as starting 5. Cov Cath bench is their saving grace. I have seen Newport 3 times this year they changed their game style against Cov Cath partly cause of McGuires absent I assume. The key to beating Cov Cath is to make them shoot outside by sitting in a zone like St. HENRY did and kept the game close till they changed to man. Cov Cath is patient in their offense but they can be beat by a lot of teams this year they don't have that knock down shooter or anyone player that can consistently take over the game as they have had in the past few. Cooper will give them fits as Cooper is disciplined in defense as Cov Cath is in offense. Neither Cov Cath or Cooper puts up tons of points even though they are the 2 better teams I feel either one can be beat by a few teams.
