The point of conference championships is to decide who the best team is in each conference. Divisions don’t make that the case. Outside of Bama and Georgia, look at the other matchups. It’s a playoff contender vs a team with 4 losses. In the PAC 12 we could have a team with 6 losses play in the PAC 12 Championship game.

Conferences are there for tradition. I’m in favor of keeping tradition in college football around. I think we can do that. The conferences aren’t equal and never will be, but if you had 6 conferences then you would essentially have a 12 team playoff if it was like the Big 12 and the best two teams played. That’s the best of both worlds.

I'd be more in favor of returning to the BCS format before I'd ever advocate for expanding the playoffs.

 

In short, we don't need any more college football games than we already have. Season already takes too long as it is IMO.

For a handful of teams, for the rest of them it is just play to play. In other words, meaningless.

There may have been 15-20 that were in contention to get in the playoffs but not to win a championship. This year there has been 6-8 at the most at the beginning of the year and really just 1 for most of the year.

We’re in November and we have 9 teams with a path to the playoff that’s not unrealistic. That’s pretty good imo.

This is a sign that what we are doing is working for the most part but there are things we can do to make this current system work a little better without overhauling everything about the sport.

Irony in a nutshell. The BCS had it right the whole time. But the country had a fit in 2011 when Bama and LSU had the rematch. Everybody wanted a playoff system to stop Bama and the SEC from ruining college football. Fast forward and here we are again, and Mike Slive new it when they were proposing the 4 team playoff. The SEC will for the most part always have 2 teams fighting for 4 spots. Alabama, as long as Saban stays around will always be in contention for one of those spots. If you make it a 6 team playoff; you will essentially guarantee Bama and one other SEC team a spot.

I am fine with some variations in rules because of the degree of difficulty at the NFL level.

Agreed, unless "being in contention" means nothing more than "making the final four" and therefore having an opportunity to get manhandled by Alabama. At least for this season, that's what we're talking about, because Alabama isn't beating anybody by less than two scores. I said that after week 1 or 2 and stand by it.

No it won’t. The best players will still go to the same schools. Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, Michigan, etc. will always get the best players. If you want to level the playing field then Nick Saban needs to retire because until he does it will remain how it is. You may have a Clemson or an Ohio State challenge Bama or even beat Bama occasionally, but as long as Saban is there none of this really matters.
