How would you change college football?

Featured Replies

If you had the almighty power to instill every change you wanted to make college football into the sport you want it to be, what would you do?

Adopt NFL rules across the board, except for OT. I'd tweak it a bit, but generally leave the OT rules in place.

Completely remove the targeting rule.

Only 4 teams getting the playoffs is a joke.

It needs to be 16 teams which should help spread the elite talent out among more schools and make the game more competitive at the top.

As it stands now each year you have a few teams with a chance (few if you are lucky) and you have all the rest of the teams (Kentucky comes to mind) that are playing for nothing more than participation trophies.

College football is by far my least favorite football.

I'd be more in favor of returning to the BCS format before I'd ever advocate for expanding the playoffs.

In short, we don't need any more college football games than we already have. Season already takes too long as it is IMO.

The Playoff absolutely would include all P5 winners, at minimum.

- No divisions in conference. 2 best teams play each other for the championship.

- Even # of power conferences

- Even # of team in each conference. This would mean making easy decisions like adding Boise State, Fresno State, and BYU to the PAC 12.

- Every power conference gets matched up with another power conference every year. Commissioners choose the matchups.

- Winner of each conference gets an automatic bid to playoff. I’m against this now because of situations where one division is significantly worse than the other division it creates a scenario where a bad team can make the playoff. If you take the 2 best teams and have them play it eliminates this need.

- All conferences should play 9 conference games.

- All teams should play 10 power conference opponents

- Any non power conference opponents cannot be FCS level schools

- 2 levels of targeting like flagrant fouls in basketball. Intent needs to be examined.

The season definitely needs to be reduced to accommodate a meaningful postseason but that is the thing about college football, it has never been about doing the right thing, it is always about the cash money.

Having 2 sets of rules for the same sport is stupid. 100% agree with this.

This. I like 6 teams personally but anymore than that is overkill.

The great thing about college football isn’t a meaningful postseason it’s about a meaningful regular season games 1-12.

For a handful of teams, for the rest of them it is just play to play. In other words, meaningless.

Same in all sports.

How do you make the first half of the season matter then? Your season could be done with regards to winning the championship in the first 2 weeks. I love that because it’s so unique in sports and really works towards awarding the best team for the entirety of the season not who is playing the best at the end of the year.

Exactly. All 12 games don't matter for every team. Only the ones who aren't "name brand."
