How does Michael Mayer compare to Highlands’ Derek Smith?

Featured Replies

I agree on Mayer having the edge on D. But I think Smith has the edge on O. He had 300+ yards receiving in one game.

Highlands always ran up the score back in the 90’s. Was there even a running clock back then? Mayer has only played an entire 2nd half 4 times this year. So if CCH would run up the score which they wouldn’t then Mayer stats on offense would be much more impressive.

There was no running clock back in those days. I recall a game where Highlands put up 80+ on Campbell County which is virtually impossible to do nowadays unless the other team is scoring at will as well.

Agreed. And I would add that those 300, plus yards came against a 2-8

Scott team. I remember the Scott teams of the late nineties. Hardly an accomplishment for someone as good as Smith and Mayer.

I would also add that Mayer is much more than just a receiving tight end. His blocking skills are remarkable. Oftentimes, in short yardage situations, the Colonels will run behind him or they will line him up in the backfield and use him as a lead blocker. And, on a few occasions, he has run the ball with great success.

Perhaps Smith was an good blocking tight end. I can't say. I only saw him play a few times in high school and I don't remember paying particular attention to his role as a blocker. But I do remember that the knock on him in college was that, for a TE, he was not a very good blocker.

So, if we are judging these players on the standards for their position, as opposed to merely counting receiving yards, the clear edge goes to Mayer.

So are we judging Smiths college career vs Mayer’s high school career?

Are we comparing Smith's rec yards from Lorenzen to Mayer's rec yards from Jacob?

Blocking Georgia LBs is a little different than blocking KY high school kids.

Honestly, these arguments are so silly. They are both AMAZING, we are splitting hairs in trying to decide "who is better". No disrespect to AJ or Caleb, but they aren't Jared, so that should be the end of the debate.

Why are we obsessed with making one better? I don't get it.

I hope Michael stays healthy, stays focused, and plays on Sunday one day -- and all of NKY can support him as we did with Shaun when he came out of Boone.

Also when Highlands was running up the score in the 90s it was the back ups. Highlands was really deep then and the back ups would usually play the second half. Highlands “ran up the score” with little sophomore Gino Guidugli at quarterback an sophomore Brent Grover at TE.

I think they put 88 points on Holmes one time as well?

No. Merely hypothecating that Mayer is a better blocker than Smith was. Granted my conclusion is based upon imperfect evidence and conjecture. But isn't that what is required when we make these ridiculous, fantastical comparisons across generations? It's really no different than concluding that Smith was a better receiver than Mayer because in one game against a 2-8 Scott team (a game that Highlands won 72-7 by the way) Smith had five touchdowns.

That said, I agree with The Double Deuce that these discussions are silly and both players are AMAZING.

I remember that game. Covered it for a local media outlet. An absolute beatdown. I believe it was actually played at Campbell County Middle School. I'd have to go back and look at the article I wrote for specifics, but I'm pretty sure Dale exhausted every effort possible in that game to score as many points as possible.

Frank Jacobs was pretty good too.

Better than pretty good!!! Mr Football number one!!! Frank was an absolute unit, and was crazy good in two sports at Notre Dame.

I saw him up close and personal last Friday night & he’s maybe the most impressive HS football player I’ve seen in this state in a long, long time.
