While I disagree with a lot of the rule changes going on in football today, Clay Matthews is just stupid... That’s what this comes down to. You’ve been called each week for it, yet you keep making the same plays. That’s a Clay problem, not an NFL problem.

Short answer - yes. Let the qbs wear pink skirts and tights and don't breathe on 'em.

I don't know about past weeks but the hit today looked clean to me.

I think the larger issue is the NFL Agenda to protect the QB.

They might as well put flags on the QB instead of tackling them.

What was he supposed to do different?

What was he supposed to do different?

Not tackle him.

Folks, this is all about the money and protecting the league's most valuable assets because second string quarterbacks are unwatchable.

Here's the flawed logic. Players - including quarterbacks - get hurt on perfectly legal plays. Witness one Jimmy G today.

What was he supposed to do different?

He drove his shoulder into him as he was driving him into the ground.

Again, I hate the rules as they are regarding the QB. In my personal opinion, I don't think what he did today was a flag, at all. But the changes this season put emphasis on not landing your weight on the QB when you tackle him. Matthews not only did that, but drove his shoulder into the QB as they hit the ground. I hate it, but that's a flag.

He now has a target on him because he keeps getting these flags. He'll either find a way to adapt, or he'll keep getting penalized.

The hit today was clean, I agree. But, it's against the rules now.

I agree with your second point 100%.

I understand the need to protect big money investments but some things go against physics. There are times when players add a little oomph when burying the QB but this play and the Dulap play were clean.

Clay Matthews doesn’t have to look very far to figure out why he keeps getting called for these penalties. The reason there is such an emphasis on not landing with your weight on the QB is because of Aaron Rodgers and his injury last year. It’s that simple. I disagree with it 100%. I don’t think the QB should have special rules. If you can tackle a running back that way you should be able to tackle the QB that way. Just give the QB a red jersey already.

At the rate they are going they will carry flags within 10 years if not sooner and the NFL will be unwatchable. Either that or they will all be running around with bubbles.

I really don't understand what a defender is supposed to do when they tackle a guy straight on in the front of the body? Are they supposed to somehow magically "spin the QB" as they fall to avoid landing on them--Hard to defy gravity??

Clay Matthews thinks so. He got called for his third roughing the passer penalty in the first three games today. The one he got called for last week was atrocious and this one may be just as bad.

Clay Matthews says NFL 'getting soft' as league defends latest roughing-the-passer flag

It's very simple the reason the NFL has gotten soft is because of its former players. This all started with former players sueing because of head injuries, etc.

It set the NFL on a path where it needs to protect itself in all areas. Meaning they have to show they are doing everything possible to make the game safe as possible. Hence the rules when hitting a receiver, hitting the QB, the new helmet rule this year.

This whole movement of changing the rules and making the game safer. Began when the former NFL players started sueing. These rules will help prevent players in the future from finding other reasons to sue, when other injuries arise.
