I would agree. And why do they all have to be at 7:30 PM. Why not stager the times also.

 

They don't have to start at 7:30, and they don't even have to be on Friday. Several of this week's games start at other times, and games at Hopkinsville and Tilghman are being played on Saturday. But the two schools have to consult and agree to play them at another time/date; it can't be solely the decision of the host school.

 

Here's the relevant info from the KHSAA's instructions to host teams:

"In accordance with KHSAA Tournament Regulations, all playoff contests shall be held on Friday unless there exists a mutual agreement between the schools to hold the game on another day due to field conditions or availability, or in the mutual best interests of the competing teams. The game time shall be 7:30 p.m. local time unless the schools have a mutual agreement to play at another time."

YES! Friday night's mud bowls were unnecessary. I watched a football float on top of water when the official set it down. I watched players sink to mid calf in mud. The announcers stopped giving stats over the intercom because they couldn't see the numbers of the jerseys. I've heard "that's football" so many times it's pathetic. Players wanted to postpone the game because it was just a matter of who could hold the ball and slide the farthest. It was nothing but an injury waiting to happen. And there were several because of the mud. At some point someone should have stepped up and postponed some of those games. Those fields won't heal until spring thaw.

Muddy fields cut down on the games speed, reducing impact forces. Also, plays in which an ankle or knee might be injured have a much decreased chance of the cleat anchoring into the ground. All this while softening the landing surface on falls.

 

Maybe there's more injuries from linemen slipping and falling on each other in pile-ups ?

I know it happened in 1980 when Conner and Scott were postponed for weather reasons.

 

With the financial strain that many schools are now under, its absolutely the right thing to do if means more people buying tickets.

Any and all postponements should come before the game and not during the game. If it is called during the game it will most likely change the outcome. For example, say there is a team has a lot of momentum going in the game, well if they decide to call it, and wait for tomorrow then their momentum is completely wiped out and the complexion of the game is completely changed.

I actually meant that I wished more teams played regular season games on Saturday night.

I would recommend Saturday afternoon.

 

This is common in Illinois, come playoff time. The weather is generally warmer and better during the day. Early-afternoon games on a weekend allow fans time to tailgate, and it all makes for a great atmosphere for football.

You're a western Kentuckian, you can probably answer this: In seasons where Hopkinsville and Christian County (and to a lesser extent, Mayfield and Graves County) are both slated to host playoff games the same week, how is it determined who will play on Friday night and on Saturday? (Those not knowing, Hoptown/Christian and Graves/Mayfield share fields).

 

I'm assuming the regular season winner gets first call, but that may be too simple of an answer. Thanks!

Mayfield-Graves ... is handled on a rotating year-to-year basis. In odd years, one school gets the first choice for the entire postseason. In even years, the other gets the choice.

 

Hopkinsville-Christian, as I understand it, rotate it from week to week. Both teams are at home this week, and Christian gets the first choice. They're playing on Friday with Hoptown using the SOC on Saturday.

 

That's because the last time they both had home playoff games, Hoptown played on Friday. If they're both at home next week (unlikely as it is), they will switch and Hoptown will play on Friday.

Interesting. I assumed that if you started out playing on Saturday (like Hoptown this year), you would play on Saturday for the rest of the playoffs (if they both continued to be the host school.)

 

Two very interesting examples, and to my knowledge, the only situation like that in Kentucky, other than Manual/St. Xavier.

I wonder why they don't consider playing a double header at the SOC. I'm sure many in the area have an interest in both teams. From a fans prespective that would be awesome.
