NEW 9th region predictions

With DJ missing almost the whole season, does this give another team a chance to step up and take it? Or is Holmes still the favorite w/ Rice, Henderson, and Hill in the starting lineup?

Who proclaimed Holmes as favorite? I think the fans from Park Hills might have an opinion.

I agree.. I say CovCath is the early favorite with DJ down.

Holmes was the favorite before Jefferson's injury. Now I would put CovCath ahead, but still only slightly. The matchups are pretty close:

Jacobs/Hill- two best players in the region........EDGE- Holmes

Bovard/Henderson- possibly two most atheletic players in the region, but Bo is a better outside shooter...........EDGE CovCath

Brown/Avery- two undersized players with heart, tough to call, I say..........EDGE CovCath

Grimes/Rice- similar players but Rice has a lot more experience......EDGE Holmes

Schult/ Nelson?Clark?- rebounders inside but CCH has experience......EDGE CCH.

I think CovCath has a superior bench, but these Holmes kids have shown the ability to play the whole game anyways. Regardless, these matchups will be fun, no matter who is on the court for each team.

Can't wait to watch the match ups.

As CCH5432 stated, Holmes was the favorite early on simply because they returned 4 out of 5 starters from last year. But the injury of DJ definetly closes some gaps between CCH and Holmes (maybe even HC).

IMO the key to Holmes success now is how much Avery has developed considering he'll be running the show.

Avery could have developed a lot, but he is still not even close to Jefferson's ability.

Holmes will suffer quite a bit from Jefferson's injury. If DJ does not come back this year, Holmes will not win the region.

Avery obviously doesn't have the same ability as DJ, but he is good enough to run the show. Let's not forget Holmes still has 3 of the top let's say 6 players in the region in Hill, Rice, and Henderson. As long as those 3 play to their ability, I don't see the loss of DJ being that huge of a blow until they play a Holy Cross or CovCath. But as far as DJ NOT returning, that's out of the question.

Worst case scenario he'll be back senior night (AT THE LATEST), so they would have him for districts and region no matter what. If all goes well, they'll get him back early January, so he'll only miss November and December (which is obviously still a huge blow). Jefferson will miss 9-12 weeks.

Besides the 3 from Covington is there any other team that can at least compete?

Austin might be the best player but Duran means more to the Holmes team. He's their primary ballhandler, primary playmaker, the best part of their press, the key to their fastbreaks and you cant forget about his ability to rebound. With him out and Avery in your missing out on 5 or 6 rebs a game. Do you know how many easy baskets that Hill, Rice and Henderson get because of Duran? Not having that might make it really frustrating for these guys when they have to work for everyone of their points.

Legitimate point. But Avery can run the point just as well. IMO he's the best jr point guard in nky (aside from Simpson of HHS). Avery and Hill will split time at the point. Hill has the best ball handling skills on the team so you'll want your best player having the ball at all times but Braeon is alot like BJ. A little undesized but can rebound with the big boys. Braeon will drive and dish but his vision isn't as good as Duran's.

Losing DJ will definetly hurt but I don't see it being that big of a factor until they play a better team like CCH or HC.

Also remember that Holmes bench will be alot deeper this year than in years past which will allow them to press the whole game and wear teams down with their defense.

I cant think of anybody else in the region. HC may give both Holmes and CcH a run for their money.....especially if they are playing at home in that cracker box.

No one outside Holy Cross, Holmes, or CovCath will win the 9th region.

But yes i agree it will either be Holmes, CCH, or HC to take region this year, which is why I don't see the loss of Duran really hurting them IN NKY until they play CCH or HC. But also remember last year Holmes played CCH w/o Duran practically the whole game, Braeon stepped in and Holmes still beat them.

Holmes and CCH are at the top followed by HC and then there is a Grand Canyon of a drop off IMO. Not that another NKY team cannot beat them on a given night ('04-'05 CCH loses to St. Henry, and Holmes loses to NCC).

That being said, in the district, Holmes did have Duran, and CCH smoked them, granted Holmes was having difficulties by that time.
