Not taking anything away from their accomplishments as they truly won their championships on the field of play.............but have their ever been a tandem of World Series and Super Bowl champions who are less dominating?

 

Cardinals did win their division with only 83 wins. And normally a 4-1 Series victory would be considered a route, but do you really feel they are the best team in baseball or just the team that won the World Series?

 

Steelers did not even win their division, had to rally just to qualify for the playoffs, and possibly avoided an early exit with the Palmer injury. Then played good enough to win the Super Bowl but do you get the feeling they were ever a dominating team like other Super Bowl winners?

 

Is this a trend? Maybe put together a fairly good team and hope everything falls into place in the playoffs and no one else has a dominating team?

Pittsburgh, imo, was a lot better of a football team than St. Louis was a baseball team this season... not even close. Pittsburgh was still 11-5 on the season and had a solid nucleus. They finished second in their division but were essentially just as good as the team that won the division. St. Louis backed into the playoffs and won only 83 games... nearly blowing a 10+ game lead (or however much it was).

 

Both teams did have a lot go their way in the post-season.

 

So to answer the question, Pittsburgh, no way. St. Louis, maybe so. No team in recent history, on paper, appears to be as bad (or good, I should say) as this year's Cardinals.

^ Actually, the more I think about it, it is somewhat of a tough question to answer. I still stand by my contention that Pitt was a better football team than the Cards were a baseball team, but I guess one could argue Pittsburgh was one of the worst teams to recently win a Superbowl... however, I do not think they were a bad team, does that make sense??? For as heralded as they are right now, New England's first Superbowl team was the worst I have seen win a Superbowl.

 

I guess a better way to look at it: if the St. Louis Cardinals were a football team, they would have been 8-8 going into post-season play and won the Superbowl. Pitt was 11-5 and won the Superbowl. I feel confident saying that teams 9 times out of 10 will win the Superbowl, whereas in baseball the percentage is much lower.

I liked it the way it was before division play started. The teams that had the best record in each league would have faced each other in the world series. St. Louis wouldn't have made it this year but it seemed to make the regular season more exciting.

9 teams in the NFL had a 11-5 or better regular season record like the Steelers.

 

12 teams in MLB had a better regular season record than the Cardinals.

 

 

Let's go back and see if COMBINED there was ever a less dominating duo than the Steelers and Cardinals.

I don't know how you can say the Steelers were a bad Super Bowl Winner. They were 11-5 and went on the road to defeat 3 teams with a higher seed. You can prove your worth much more than that.

 

As far as the Cards, they did have a bad regular season. But most of that season they fought the injury bug. During the playoffs they were more healthy than they had been the most of the year. With a lineup that again featured Pujols, along with once injured players such as Edmonds, Rolen, and Eckstein it became more poent. PLus their bullpen performed extremely well during the playoffs.

I don't watch baseball anymore, so I really can't say much about the cards. The way I look at it the Cards stepped up when it counted and the rest of the league did not. It will go down in the record books, as the Cards were the best team in baseball in 2006.

 

As far as the Steelers, I think their playoff run was unbelievable. I don’t think many past super bowl champs could have did what they did.

The Steelers did what good teams do and that is find a way to win. They also got what a lot of great teams get and that is some breaks. I still don't think they were the best team in the NFL or even in the Super Bowl last year for that matter. Bottom line they won it so it doesn't really matter. Personally I felt like it was a lot of luck but I give them mad props for going on the road like they did!

Cards, what a crazy season. Preseason favorite to 1 game from being the biggest choke in maybe sports history..... several weeks later world champs! I can see why the thread was made for both teams.

Is there really an answer to this question? You can opine in any fashion in this forum and there is no real answer. Considering that both were not expected to be champions once the playoffs started (at least in Vegas' eyes),,,well,,,in my opinion, that makes them even more worthy champions!!!!

I think you are absolutely right. I also think Larusa did an outstanding job of managing his team throughout the playoffs.

Both teams won the games they had to, Pitt won three games on the road against very good teams, they were solid. Hard to luck your way through multiple games.
