Totally disagree. They had a bad SECOND half of the regular season due to injuries. People (the village idiots on the radio) poor mouthed their pitching, but the Tigers are probably convinced the guys can throw.

 

They have some of the best defenders at their position in baseball, starting with the cat behind the plate. Rolen at third, Edmonds in center, Eckstein at short and Pujols at first are all one of the best defensive players in baseball. Pujols might be the best player in the game. How does this equate to the worst team ever to win the WS?

 

I hate it when it's this easy.

I saw a stat on Mike and Mike the other day that showed that out of the major sports (football, basketball and baseball), the past 17 champions from those 3 sports only had 3 teams who had the best regular season and also won their respective championship. That means 14 teams had great regular seasons but didn't get it done when it mattered the most. That's what makes it exciting. Anyone in the playoffs has a shot as long as they get it done at crunch time. Both the Cardinals and the Steelers did that. We can look at it as an optimist or a pessimist.

 

I think it also speaks to the parity in sports. How many times has the team that everyone picked to win the NCAA basketball championship done so? The last UK title in 1998 was a local example when noone picked the Cats to win it all.

^ Actually, the more I think about it, it is somewhat of a tough question to answer. I still stand by my contention that Pitt was a better football team than the Cards were a baseball team, but I guess one could argue Pittsburgh was one of the worst teams to recently win a Superbowl... however, I do not think they were a bad team, does that make sense??? For as heralded as they are right now, New England's first Superbowl team was the worst I have seen win a Superbowl.

 

I guess a better way to look at it: if the St. Louis Cardinals were a football team, they would have been 8-8 going into post-season play and won the Superbowl. Pitt was 11-5 and won the Superbowl. I feel confident saying that teams 9 times out of 10 will win the Superbowl, whereas in baseball the percentage is much lower.

The Cards are pretty bad to be world series champs. Especially since Carpenter only had to pitch one game in the series to win it. The Tigers were bad too and the WS shouldn't be ugly baseball. The Steelers were legit. Their defense was tough, and their offense made big plays.

St. Louis regular season record was the worst in history of a world series winner.

 

I feel they were the team playing the best baseball at the right time of the year.

 

I liked it the way it was before division play started. The teams that had the best record in each league would have faced each other in the world series. St. Louis wouldn't have made it this year but it seemed to make the regular season more exciting.

One thing people need to realise about the Cards is that thru an entire season full of injuries, they finally had the team they expected to have on the field when the playoffs started. Had they experienced better luck thru-out the season regarding injuries, they would most certainly won more than 83 games.

As for the Steelers, they r still a dangerious team. They move the ball well between the 20's, but big Ben, minus a great fullback, is forced to throw to much & he's makin mistakes in the face of a bring the house rush in the red zone.

Then where were all the good teams?
