How much do HS games on TV hurt attendance?

Featured Replies

For those like me who are able to see many different teams , it may affect my decision. However, those folks in my situation are small in number.

Actually, I'm pretty sure anyone can see many different teams if they choose.

For "older fans" it is a fabulous way to view. Many can't get out to a game for health or other reasons....and I don't mean you, LN!

They key to your sentence and the point I was trying to make is "if they choose." Most high school fans I know follow their team and they see teams their team plays. They don't , as a rule, venture out to see games not involving their team. That's not a criticism at all. I completely understand that.

I think if you want to see a high school game live, you need to show up at the stadium. I have no problem with delayed viewing of 24 hours or more.

I think that anyone who went to the Beechwood/NCC game could clearly see the difference. Traditionally, the stands are packed and people are standing all over the place. This year the game was on TV and there was plenty of room in the stands. It definately hurt the gate.

I also agree with DMZ76, Beechwood has a lot of older alumni who come regularly to the games. It was much easier for those with health issues to stay at home and watch it on TV.

However, overall I think it is a great thing. It is not as if the same team is on every week, so no one school is getting consistently shorted. ICN 6 does a nice job and families like to watch the reruns.

I remember several years ago when Beechwood traveled to Pikeville. My kids were very little and I did not want to travel so far with them. Mountain TV broadcast the game up here and the coverage was great! We had a little party and watched the game on TV. Quite a treat!

So you're against the games being televised live?

Here is a little something to think about. Put the games on pay-per-view. Not much, maybe charge 8 or 9 dollars.

It would never work because you would have so few viewers you could never sell the advertising that supports the production.

I don't think people realize how expensive it is to do a live game...

I would concider that mission accomplished. It would get more people out to the game... right?

Do the schools get any money for the games being on tv?

Good question. And I have to agree, I like the delay idea for High School games . And yes I think there should be a definate cut of the proceeds to each school televised. So Higlands and Cov. Cath. should be expecting an nice little/big check this week from the game thanks to the kind people at Remke.:thumb: Next time I shop there I will be checking on this.:D

My initial thought was to disagree with you, but the more I thought about it, the more I have to say hmmm...

Remke and Skyline are (or seem to be fairly major sponsors), you (Insight) own the station the game is airing on, you own all the equipment, what's your expenses really? Labor of course, what else? Why shouldn't the schools get something? Just wondering aloud.

It is certainly something to sleep on.
