That's because it isn't. Terrorism is what it is. This was murder. Not any less terrible, just different.

Pro and a con to this. He was a kid with not much of a plan, but he is also mentally unstable. Could go either way. But as you said, If you sign up fo the gig do what you need to do.

If you are the guard you should be highly trained and skilled in stopping a lone wolf attack.

The FBI did a study on Active Shooter Incidents from 2000 to 2013 and one of the findings was law enforcement suffered casualties in 21 (46.7%) of the 45 incidents where they engaged the shooter to end the threat. This resulted in 9 officers killed (4 of whom were ambushed in a shooting) and 28 wounded.

If you're not willing to engage the shooter in that situation you don't belong in that job. I'm not saying he needed to rush into fire but just engaging the shooter in some way could have saved lives.

Really not much to say about this. National news is saying his families home is now being guarded..... We have too many problems to count at this point.

This reminds me of Black Mirror episode where measures were taken to encourage soldiers to enhance their kill rate. While the show was fiction, it referenced a real study that found early in modern warfare soldiers were firing their weapons with few kills suggesting soldiers were intentionally missing their targets. Our military made a few changes to training and increased kills, but even that came at a cost of higher rates of PTSD.

It doesn't walk like a duck. Or talk like a duck. There are specific criteria needs for it to be considered terrorism and this shooting doesn't fit. I'm not sure why anyone feels the need to label it terrorism because mass murder for any reason is horrible. One isn't necessarily worse than the other.

Then we need another word.

Usually terrorism is associated with a political agenda. I would call this mass murder.

Then we need another word.

Why? Mass shooting? Mass murder? Those aren't good enough?

Not for me. This epidemic isn't random. The dude in Vegas was a mass shooting. School shootings seems to have evolved into something more than just random murder. There is a ideological point, which is very concerning.

This was a school shooting/mass murder. I'm can't figure out why some of you think that's not bad enough.

Dictionary.com says:

1. the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.

2. the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorization.

3. a terroristic method of governing or of resisting a government.

Reading this thread makes me wonder why anyone thinks allowing teachers to have weapons in school is a possible solution or deterent.

I realize many people would disagree with me but if we are going to contain school shootings it will have to be a multi-faceted approach and one of the last lines of defense will be armed teachers barricaded inside their classrooms taking up a defensive position with a gun.

In short, the doorway into a classroom is the perfect choke point to kill an attacker.
