Speaking to a friend with the company, these 63 clubs were all losing money and had for a while. All associates will be offered jobs at other clubs or at Walmart stores or offered a nice severance package if they don't want one of the offered jobs.

I call bull on that JD. The one in Oakley was so pack from open to close you couldnt park in the lot. If they were losing money it was mismanagement.

10 of the stores will turn into distribution centers. Walmart said the employees who lost their job can "re-apply."

Work close by and shop there regularly and it's a graveyard every time I'm in there.

A few different reasons: Too close to other Wal-Mart properties, not in the right areas, desire to get into more online retailing.

 

Each employee will receive a bonus, 60 days pay, and some will get an additional severance package.

Call what ever you want. But if a store is as @75center says, is not very busy it is hard to turn a profit. The profit margins in the "Club" business are VERY low to begin with...so low in fact that the yearly membership dues are a significant portion of their profit each year.

 

I've actually seen high volume stores that struggled to turn a profit due to things like competition driving down profit margins, high theft or high associate turnover (especially in inner cities where stores struggle with turnover.)

 

If it was just mismanagement those managers would have been shipped out way before it got to this point.

The one in Lexington located on New Circle Road off the Winchester Road exit is very busy every time I’ve been there.

I doubt it ever closes.

I agree with @75center, I usually went to the one in Oakley instead of Florence and it was over quiet there. Little bummed.

I'm not familiar with employment law but I thought it was a requirement for large employers.

The one locally I go to is always busy and gets a lot of traffic from across the border. It is closing in three weeks (no advance notice to employees, including management level staff). It is more about Wal-Mart uping their online game. I think many of these will be converted to distribution centers. If a store is hemorrhaging, you close it. I get it.To close all at once is strategic.

All I ever hear out of anyone's mouth is Costco Costco Costco.
