January 14, 20188 yr Walmart also announced that 1000 jobs in the home office would be eliminated and 3500 Co-Managers in the stores would be eliminated, stores with 4 will go to 2, stores with 2 will go to 1 and most stores with 1 will go to 0. 1800 Assistant Manager positions will be added and I'd expect most of those to initially be filled by some of the displaced Co-Managers. Co-Mangers will be given either 30 or 60 days to find another job in the company or will be offered a severance package. Didn’t they jus announce bonuses and pay raises from the new tax plan. I guess they have to pay for it somehow.

This has been in the works for quite a while I was told...it nearly happened last year. Walmart US employees well over 1 million people so 1,000 in the H.O. and a net 1,700 in the stores is a drop in the bucket. As far as Co-Managers goes, the company is going back to the same levels in the stores that they had forever. They expanded it a few years ago and it never really paid off or made sense...too many chiefs so to speak. Typical large volume store will have a Manager, 2 Co-mgrs, 6-8 Assistant managers.

Agree with a lot of what you've said in this thread, and while WM is one of the World's largest employers, 1K Home Office jobs lost mostly in NWA isn't just a drop in the bucket in the eyes of the local community. The continued hiring/layoff phases in the NWA area will continue to have an impact on the business and talent they are able to develop. It will be interesting to see how this competition vs Amazon continues to evolve over the coming months/years... WM has definitely made necessary moves to catch up in the Ecommerce world.

Ability to attract and retain talent to the area is important given how competitive the retail industry has become. Seems like they should be able to smooth things out a bit, especially given solid company performance over the past year or so. Yes, NWA is growing quickly from a population standpoint. Now, the infrastructure to support said growth is quite a ways behind in some areas.

Home office jobs get reduced every 3 or 4 years, it seems like they become bloated and need to get reeled in after a while. I don't think Walmart has ever had trouble attracting talent to Bentonville and don't expect this to slow them down going forward. Just like the stores some jobs have been streamlined or eliminated by new technology or new procedures. As far as infrastructure it has come leaps and bounds over the past 15 years. Roads and highways are much improved or completely brand new, the new airport has made travel in and out much more accessible than the old days of flying into Fayetteville and there is a booming non-Walmart economy in that area.
