When there is a mercy rule situation like this, I would love to see a winner be declared at halftime and the second half be utilized as a joint practice or scrimmage. Turn something that really sucks for both teams into something fun and useful.

 

I'm sure I'll catch heat for that idea but that's my vision for such debacles.

At what point spread/point in the game does KHSAA declare TKO?

 

Is there a format to assure some uniformity? (Each team gets x offensive/defensive possessions.)

 

Does it pose any complications with practice regulations? (assuming there are regulations in place.)

I'm not sure how a rule like that could be constructed but I think it would be fairly obvious at halftime of a 76-1 game, that the game was decided in the first minute.

It IS a game of runs, but I tend to agree with you here. So then what? Coaches, event administrators, and referees conference to discuss the course of action?

 

I'll go ahead and try to say this legibly, one way this would affect teams is, some of the districts use "points scored/allowed in seeding games" as a tiebreaker for seeding the district tournament. A route of a district rival not only improves morale of the winners, but puts them in better position in February. Would any coaches be willing to concede that?

I don't care if it's an NBA team playing against the Western girls, there are ways to handle this more appropriately than 76

Based on this score only and not seeing what was happening on the court, I would be ok with the teams ending this game early. When you only score 1 point in a game, it looks like your team has no chance of doing anything. If the team is incapable of getting the ball to the offensive end and getting off shots, there is nothing to be accomplished by continuing play. I would rather see the game end than to have a team stand there and dribble out the clock and stop playing. In general, I would rather my team play in a game with a final score 76-4 and the winning team playing the whole way, than have a score of 48-4 with the winning team playing keep away on offense, dribbling out the clock and stop playing the game.

JCPS is a Public School System that skims off the top for the highest achieving students and the highest excelling students and corrals them into 4-6 High Schools and then the rest average about a 16 on their ACT.

Can't imagine how much fun this game was.

If i had been Larry just, i would have said the heck with it. Split up the teams and held a scrimmage with coaches present on the floor for instruction. This game accomplished nothing for either team.

Correct. In basketball it is second half, in football it is 36 points at any moment during the game.

 

By the way, the basketball "running clock" rules aren't too much different than regular game settings.
