Well timed bye for South football

Not everyone has been in favor of South Oldham’s bye week. Highlands head coach Brian Weinrich told Fort Thomas Matters, a northern Kentucky media outlet, that he wouldn’t exchange film with South Oldham since they were able to watch their game against Oldham County last Friday.

 

“It’s just so frustrating that the KHSAA allows a team to have a buy in the 5A playoffs when they’re in a six-team district and we have to go out here and play a game,” Weinrich said to Fort Thomas Matters following the game against Oldham County. “I can not believe they allowed that to happen. They talk about fairness and they talk about safety.”

What is the normal etiquette? Teams still exchange film?

"There's a lot of water under the bridge between now and then," Tackett said. "It's the first time it's occurred. It is not a nuclear holocaust. There's a bunch of people whining that don't know all the things that happen state-wide when you have to look at that. No one is harmed by having a bye. We had four of them (Friday). I hate them. I'd love to not have them. At the same time, it's going to happen at some point. The combination of Grant County pulling out and the schools wanting to rotate pairings means it's a moving target. You have to decide is it worth shooting at a moving target or do you just leave a bye. It's funny because a lot of the people who have expressed concern aren't even involved. It didn't affect them. They didn't have a bye, but they're mad somebody else got a bye. In sports, everybody is trying to make the excuse for why they don't succeed. Many times, that's what happens."

It is bad enough Highlands has been subpar under your watch, the last thing anyone wants to hear is you making excuses.

I thought all schools were required by the KHSAA to exchange film....

Kind of petty. It isn't South Oldham's fault they had a bye. Maybe worry about winning some games.

Wowza! This is quite embarrassing IMO. Again this is the "culture" at Highlands right now. This shouldn't happen or be an issue at a program like Highlands. Or at least what the program used to be. I think it's time!

I was thinking the same thing, this is a nail in the coffin.

If I recall correctly, Highlands has done that before. That’s why they had to play on Thanksgiving at Bell County in 1992. Probably not as big a deal as it used to be with all the video out there now.

Isn't every game available? I'm betting South Oldham got game Film. As did Highlands. Come on Brian, you're better than that. Or at least I use to think you were. It's hard to think that you are Highlands Ambassador of Football. The culture pendulum has finally swung the Other direction. Congratulations. Good Luck Friday Bluebirds.

I venture to say South Oldham has a copy of every game Highlands has played. I bet the phone was ringing off the hook with teams offering films up.

Noway. Never happen. Why would Highlands hire anybody in to Compete with Dale Mueller's success? That will keep Dale's legacy untouchable at Highlands. I have heard people say that Dale knew exactly what he was doing stapling Weinrich as Head Coach. Lol! Starting to make sense now. Go Bluebirds!

Probably South Oldham could get same film from Oldham? Just don't quite understand why Coach W would want to publicly expose himself to this type of ridicule. If I understand he is saying the KHSAA has treated his program unfairly and so he is willing to be unprofessional in representing his program, his Team, and the Ft. Thomas school system and make himself a poor example to the players he leads.

 

He isn't saying South Oldham did anything wrong but his actions are directed against them. Can this possibly have a positive outcome for him? If Highlands wins (and I thought they had a real chance), the Bluebirds' victory will be diminished by these less than professional courtesy actions. If they lose, will the loss be remembered in the multiplying context that S. Oldham won despite Highlands depriving them of normal competitor film courtesies? To expose these actions himself to a media outlet is even more astonishing.
