That is awesome! Thanks for sharing that. I've read Wofford, EKU and Navy have also shown interest.

 

From what's been shared on BGP about his skill set, grit, and academics, I'd love to see him go to Navy. I've only seen some highlights of Jake in action. Would he be a good fit in Navy's "flex" offense? Could one of the Ivies come calling?

Jake is quoted as saying he got a 28 on his ACT. Really nice score but it's not going to get big academic scholarships at a lot of schools. That's not to demean the score. It's a strong score but it's tough to get academic money these days. A 28 at UK may get you $1500. Maybe.

 

Dayton will give discounts to most students because they are a private school and need to discount/give grants. But a 28 doesn't put you in the top 25% of incoming students. Same with Wofford.

 

My guess is EKU being a school that doesn't have to offer full athletic scholarships may be able to take a 28 ACT and combine it with football money and get it down to a lost cost. Morehead is in the same conference as UD but my guess is a 28 gets more money there than at UD.

 

I read a quote from his coach saying Navy is interested. He could follow former Raider Gus Murray's footseps. He seems to have the mindset that would allow him to be successful at Navy.

What does he want to study in college? That is likely a big factor in what he decides to do.

He can go pre-med anywhere, so that should keep all his options open for him. That makes it purely a football decision for him IMO. What does he want to accomplish in football on the college level? Is it important to him to see if he can compete at the D1 level? Does he want to have a better opportunity to play all 4 years? IMO, those types of discussions are the key ones as he decides what is next. There are no right or wrong decisions. It is about what is the best fit for him.

Great point VOR, I have known a few kids that have wanted to see if they could compete on the D1 level, only to find out that NAIA / D3 were a better fit, and they wanted to play. As you said, no right or wrong, just what is best for him as a person.

I have talked to Jake the last couple of days, in my opinion he wants to play D1 Football but at the same time he understands he needs to find the best fit so that he gets a meaningful opportunity.

I understand that he's a great player, but sometimes we need to put things into perspective. Jake is listed as a 5'9", 185 lb all around player. Most sites have him pegged as a corner, others a slot receiver, and others have him at RB. I hate to say it, but he will not survive DI football at RB. It would probably be in his best interest to go to a school like John Carroll (DIII) or Mount Union (DIII)...be a star player there, have a chance at a DIII National Championship every year, and also get a great education for his pre-med hopes.

A lot of kids have trouble letting the game go. It’s even harder for Jake because he’s in between fringe D1/D2 and TMC. Kids often find out after their first college year it isn’t as fun as high school. I hope it all works out for him.
