Boone County grass or turf?

Is Boone County grass or turf? Looks like rain for the Highlands game Friday night... should be entertaining.

A few years back Shaun Alexander offered to pay for artificial surface for Boone County High School. The Board of Education for the county said he would have to pay to install it at ALL Boone county high schools or the Rebels could not have it.

This is why I hate school districts that have this what’s good for the goose is good for the gander attitude. I’ve battled this before when I was an AD trying to get something done & it would be shot down due to the other schools in the district not receiving the same thing. I can take some parity, but each place needs to be able to form something unique & if someone is willing to throw that bone to a school district, they are idiots for not accepting.

I feel as though I've read on here that there was more to this story...

Do the other schools in Boone County have turf? How did they go about getting turf if so?

There was more to the story but the main part is still true. He wanted to donate the majority of the money for the field to only Boone County and the county wouldn't come up with any other funds. The county wanted to share the gift he was giving. He politely declined.

There is....and it's been corrected several times. And while it's somewhat true, the real story is Alexander was going to donate a portion of the cost to turf the field, not the entire amount. Had he ponied up the total amount, then everything would have been ok. Ryle got turf because donors paid for the entire cost.

That being said, it amazes me that 3 of the 4 schools don't have turf at this point, especially Cooper, since it was built so recently. Turf for schools with large athletic departments is simply a no brainer, and provides such a benefit to not only football but many other sports, and the community.

Not true. There have been multiple threads on this topic. One catch was that Shaun had stake in a turf company that he required to do the work if he gave the money. Projects of this magnitude have to go through a bid process. There was no edict about all other schools having to get turf. I'm not positive that Shaun offered up the whole amount either but do not know for sure.

And Shaun offered to pay half for the turf. They were asking the school board to pay the other half. Ryle's field was paid for 100% from a private donation.

Thanks for setting me straight. There are two schools in Jefferson County that have private donations to cover installation of artificial surface on their football fields. The JCPS administration refuses to grant permission saying it would be unfair to he other schools that cannot afford it.

At my school we had a local business ready to donate a large metal building to be used either as a huge weight room or a small indoor facility. The we had another business ready to donate all the excavating and labor. All the board of education had to do was run water and pay for the concrete slab. Of course they voted no and we still have a weight room so small we can only lift 20 kids at one time. Makes no sense.

Building projects for new schools are so massive, to get the best for the student body some times skimping on athletic facilities is required. When you are dealing with budgets, you can't get everything everybody wants.

Boone doesn’t but the BCPWFL does. Not sure if Boone will ever make it happen.
