Best coach to never win a state championship

Featured Replies

I will start it off, with coach Bob Bronger, the current coach at Louisville Holy Cross. The coach that brought about the end of the historic trinity win streak.

According to the KHSAA Coaching Records List of Coaches with at least 200 wins all-time, 3 of those coaches are winless in the State Championship game. But with over 200 wins, I think they should be considered here:

1. Tom Larkey - 296 wins - 132 losses in 36 seasons. He has coached at Rockcastle County, Harlan County, and Perry County Central. He is 0 and 2 in State Championship games.

2. Mojo Hollowell - 285 wins - 158 losses - 6 ties in 38 seasons. He has coached at Henderson County, Union County, and OCath. He is 0 and 2 in State Championship games.

3. Jack Haskins - 275 wins - 124 losses - 2 ties in 36 seasons. He has coached at Heath, Ballard Memorial, Calloway County, Lone Oak and McCracken County. He is 0 and 3 in State Championship games.

Some that are still active (other than Larkey. Coach Hollowell passed away in recent years):

David Barnes- He’s been Runner-Up at Caldwell County and has made it to the Region Finals at Caldwell on a few other occasions. Before that he was the HC at Daviess County for several years back when it was the old four class system.

Larry Moefield- Meade County- In his 13/14 seasons leading the Green Wave he’s 0-1 in the finals, yet has some Region titles and/or appearances all while battling some of the the biggest and baddest in the state (old 4A/current 6A)

John Edge- Owensboro Catholic. Coach Edge and the Aces are always in the mix of things year in year out come late November/early December since he’s been there the last 14 years.

Craig Clayton- Hoptown (version 2.0). Coach Clayton has the Tigers in a couple finals, but they weren’t able to win one. I’m not sure his win total, but it has to be up there somewhere.

I know he went to TN and had some success also at Franklin HS and Hillsboro.

Walter Brugh of Paintsville. Had many great football teams, but finished 0-2 in the finals. Was the state's all time leader in victories before retiring in the early 90's.

I figured Alvin Johnson of Harrodsburg had over 200 victories. He was 0-3 in state titles.

John Cain of Somerset anyone?

I'd think so, not sure of his record but I know he made at least two maybe three finals. Took over an abysmal Pulaski Program and laid the groundwork for the the program they have today.

Runner up in 1978, 1981 and 1983.

Give me Jack Haskins...went to the title game coaching at places like Heath and Lone Oak...simply amazing. That man could coach some offense and build castles where others couldn't build a shack.

Won one with Highlands in '64.

Way before my time. Knew he coached at Highlands, but always associate him with Boone.

Good one. He did a great job at tiny Ballard Memorial, too

Denny Nash at Bishop David.

Ok, I'm biased, but Jeff Marksberry deserves consideration. 10 years ago, SK was a perennial doormat, winning 1 - 3 games a year. Now they win double digit games for 10 years now. Its one thing to win when you have championship caliber talent every year, quite another when you do not.
