  1. 1. Should CAL have leapfrogged Danville for #1?

Despite Danville's status as preseason #1 and a 2-0 start, the Admirals were leapfrogged by CAL in the new 2A rankings this week.

Let's compare resumes...

Danville has posted wins over 6A Frederick Douglass (1-1) and 4A Knox Central (1-1). The running clock win over FD looks much more impressive after the Broncos 49-22 victory over Tates Creek the following week. The Ads 52-28 win over Knox Central wasn't quite the thorough domination that many expected, but the outcome was never really in doubt.

Christian Academy-Louisville has defeated 5A #7 South Oldham (1-1) and 6A Eastern (1-1). South Oldham rebounded in Week 1 with a big win over 5A Doss, ranked #6 at the time, making the Centurions win over the Dragons all the more impressive. That win for CAL is the strongest of the four combined wins between the Ads and Centurions.

Right now, I'd give the edge to CAL's resume, but it's not as if Danville has had a poor showing worthy of dropping them to #2. Should the Ads have been jumped this early in the season?

I personally think this week's rankings should reflect where the teams are this week. If the ranking brain trust thinks CAL is better than Danville at this point in time, then they should rank them there, without regard to where the teams were ranked last week.

I know a lot of people feel that if a team is ranked #1, then they should stay #1 unless they lose, but I don't.

No Danville started No. 1 and should be No. 1 until they lose.

Doesn't that seem like faulty logic? Play along with this scenario:

What if Danville won three consecutive games against weak 1A schools, each by only a touchdown, while CAL won three games against ranked 6A schools, each by at least two scores. Just because we assumed Danville was best at the beginning, is it unnecessary to look at available evidence and make an adjustment?

CAL's resume is slightly better than Danville right now. However, if Danville beats Boyle on Friday and CAL beats Central Hardin, I'd argue Danville's resume will look better at that point. There isn't much else to rank them on at this point.

Should they have started #1 over defending Champs that they had just lost to? I never understood jumping them over CAL to begin with.

I mean Danville made Frederick Douglass look they've never played football before! Oh wait...

Again I don't believe Danville should have started at #1. I'll still take 3 teams from the West, who I think would beat them.

I can agree with the argument that they aren't #1 but could also argue that they are. That said, right now I'd only pick one West team over them.

I'm okay with it. Danville has pretty much their entire team back so it's not a stretch. Their defense is better than last season.

Both DeSales, and Mayfields wins are better than both CAL, and Danville.

I think there are legitimate arguments for five or six teams in 2A. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out over the season.
