According to CalPreps, if each of these 5 teams met on a neutral field, here's how they'd shake out:

Mayfield ... 4-0

CAL .... 3-1

LCA .... 2-2

Desales .... 1-3

Danville .... 0-4

Danville's argument for preseason #1 was that they returned 19 or 20 starters out of 22 positions from a state runner-up team. They hung right with CAL in last year's title game before making some mistakes in the 3rd quarter and letting the Centurions get away from them a bit.

 

As far as jumping a team in the rankings, I don't buy the notion that a team has to lose to drop. But I think the incumbent #1 has to give you a good reason to drop them and the Ads haven't done that. I think CAL has looked slightly more impressive than Danville so far, but the Admirals haven't laid an egg yet.

Honestly if you look at the body of work after the small sampling of work (only 2 weeks) I think it would go DeSales #1 (who was my preseason pick based on what they returned personnel wise) and Mayfield #2. These 2 have the best wins after 2 weeks. But there are flaws no matter how one looks at it. For instance, on paper Mayfield's win over Hoptown looks huge and by such a large margin but Hoptown is likely a paper Tiger after losing 2 of the best players in the state. Humans are error prone somewhat so it comes down to how each person in the poll weighs the information. Myself, I would have DeSales at #1 but that is me and there are 5 teams that can make a case for #1 right now.

How many of us have actually seen all of the top 5 teams play? Most of us are going purely on scores which can be misleading. The scores say Mayfield is 41 points better than Union City and 29 points better than Hopkinsville. I have watched both games several times and I don't think those scores reflect where the three teams stand/rank relative to each other. Hoptown had a pick six, two late scores on the JV, and a ton of penalty yardage help. UC repeatedly shot themselves in the foot with penalties and had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown among a host of other self-inflicted miscues. If UC were to play Hoptown, I would probably pick UC. Having studied both, I think Hoptown would have no hope of thwarting UC's running game. Point is, scores and margins of victory can never be trusted to tell the whole tale.

That's how high school sports rankings work. This isn't college football. Voters don't have the luxury of being able to watch every high school game on television. You do the best you can with what you have.

 

As for CAL being #1 until beaten, they haven't earned that from me yet. They're not Trinity, Bowling Green, Belfry, or Mayfield. They haven't shown that they can lose a lot of talent and continue to win championships year after year. It takes more than one title to earn the benefit of the doubt from me. Maybe one day, but not yet. That's just my personal philosophy on that subject.

Both very wel could of been number one to start. CAL had question marks on the beginning of the season. Danville did as well but not as many. This rivalry game will tell us more about Danville.

 

Another question to be asked is the fall of LCA to 5? Remember this team beat Danville last year but fell short in the playoffs when it mattered.

 

But we can all agree the top 5 are loaded in 2A.

I just confirmed that CalPreps is stupid.

Will let you know after the game Friday night at Central Hardin. I believe Central Hardin will provide a stiff test for CAL. Even with 5 starters out with injuries, Central Hardins offensive and defensive lines are very physical and they have developed a passing game this season

Explain? I think you are being to much of a homer. Anyone one of the top 5 are formidable and this years winner is going to have to be good and likely lucky to win it all. Danville is not at this point separated itself from the crowd and may or may not.
