Was slavery in the long run a good or bad thing?

Being a racist is ignorant.
Not sure that I agree, but I understand where you are coming from. Example....I have an aquaintance that is employed by the Indiana Pacers, he is white. His first name is more associated with Black culture than White culture. When head coach Nate McMillan first met my friend and learned his name, McMillans response was " I thought we hired a Black guy". In today's environment, that is considered to be "racist", but I explained to my friend that there is a huge difference between Ignorance and Racism. McMillan is just ignorant.

The situation you explained isn't racism. Suggesting slavery was a good thing is however.

It would be considered racism by many, especially if roles were reversed. Suggesting that slavery was or is a good thing is not good by any stretch, as I believe in the individual, liberty, and freedom. I think MtRef genuinely asked the question out of pure curiousity, with no ill will toward anyone. I should add that McMillans tone was not a jovial or happy one upon his discovery.

Maybe not. So did it benefit the world since his ancestors were in America and he was born here due to that?

Why would his influence be different just because he was born somewhere else? Is Ghandi's influence less because he was Indian?

Racism is ignorance initially, plain and simple. That is the beginning that leads to the hate.

Ignorance, identity politics, and group think are all contributing factors for sure.

This is a question I can't even believe is being asked. The premise that somehow there was a silver lining in slavery, that being they were brought to America is ludicrous. We are talking about people who were brought to America against their will. They were hunted like animals. Sold in auctions like livestock. They were chained in holds of ships in numbers so great they could not comfortably sit, stand or lay. They were taken to a country who's climate and agriculture were virtual polar opposite of what they knew. They were again sold like livestock. At every turn they were ripped from their family and everything they knew. Those were the luckiest of their lot. Others were whipped like recalcitrant cattle, hunted down like runaway dogs when they tried to escape. Some were killed for attempting. They were denied education, the ability to own property, or even "own" their own children.

The weren't applying to come here, waiting for the opportunity.

I will say this. We as a society have many things we need to work on. Thats every race.

Apparently we can't do this without talking Politics...
