August 18, 20179 yr I heard this or read this somewhere the other day. Yes slavery was bad, as it destroyed familes, changed culture, and abuse to no limits. But for those whose ancestors were slaves and were able to be in America now due to slavery, is that a good thing. They were saying that is it not better to be in America than being born in some third world poverty country in Africa? But I thought that while maybe true, wouldnt those that were great leaders like MLK and born in Africa would it be as it is today with all the poverty and wars?
August 18, 20179 yr Slavery was absolutely in every possible way a horrible thing. Personally, I'd rather they had got to make the decision of whether to be in America or not of their own free will.
August 18, 20179 yr It's a strange question to ask, that begs the justification of evil, but one that's very difficult to answer even considered in a vacuum. Would poverty in Africa be as bad as it is now if colonialism (and the slave trade that was a part of it) hadnt shredded the continent to bits for five centuries?
August 18, 20179 yr Author Would poverty in Africa be as bad as it is now if colonialism (and the slave trade that was a part of it) hadnt shredded the continent to bits for five centuries? Good response, didn't actually think of that. Thanks But do you think it would have gotten better if no colonialism or would they have gotten the technology/medicine eventually anyway. One thing colonialism did was stop a lot of tribal wars. Do you think that would have eventually stopped also.

European leaders fought constantly for centuries until the end of WWII and the creation of multinational organizations specifically designed to curtail conflict and encourage cooperation. I'd be lying if I said I understood the environmental, sociological, and economic reasons why Europe was so technologically far ahead of Africa by the time of the Renaissance. I don't really have the first idea how they would have progressed had history unfolded without European meddling.
August 18, 20179 yr I guess you have to go off of the assumption that Africans would have immigrated to America without Slavery to really answer the question. I guess if you assume the answer is that they wouldn't they you need to ask any African Americans you know if they would trade being an American born here to erase the slavery that existed in the past. For me I am of the belief that if slavery never existed then Africans would have eventually immigrated here so the answer is absolutely 100%, slavery was and is a terrible thing and should have never existed.
August 18, 20179 yr Author This is a joke, right?! :banghead: I actually think its a pretty good topic to think about. Would MLK have been able to achieve things in Africa had his ancestors never been here to allow him the chance. Im not trying to make a statement of anything for slavery. But some have had some good points which was my whole purpose.

Colonial Conquest from Europe stifled any creative, technological advancement the African community's may have developed.

Would there have been a need for MLK to have to achieve the same equality victories he was forced to in the US?
August 18, 20179 yr Author Would there have been a need for MLK to have to achieve the same equality victories he was forced to in the US? Maybe not. So did it benefit the world since his ancestors were in America and he was born here due to that?

It would be my guess that MLK's aim at his achievements weren't born out of a dream to succeed in the same way for example as someone practicing day after day with the hopes of breaking the world record for the 50 yard dash. My guess is that he would have been more than happy to never have become famous for what he became famous for if not for the societal strife that he grew up impassioned to change.
August 18, 20179 yr If this is your mindset, you're a racist. Period. Some of you would be better off not talking, unless of course you don't care that your ignorance is posted for all the world to see. Unbelievable.
