Anybody got any love for Adrian Belew, from Covington? I don't much care for King Crimson, but I'm down with The Bears and their subsequent offshoots (which didn't include Belew). He's got a mountain of credits as a session player also.

 

He's played with a LOT of big names out there. I think he was part of the Talking Heads touring band for a while, worked with Brian Eno as a result, Paul Simon, Nine Inch Nails...

 

I've not listened much to The Bears, but I've not really ever gotten into Adrian Belew's solo stuff...or Zappa and King Crimson.

Pat O'Brien one of the most famous guitarist within the Death Metal ranks was born in Northern Kentucky, and graduated from Conner High School in Hebron in 1983.

 

He is most recognized for being the lead guitarist for the death metal band "Cannibal Corpse" as well as his time playing in the famous metal band "Slayer", and "Chastain".

 

Some Northern Kentucky metal heads might recall his early days as the guitarist for the local popular band "Prizoner".

 

His career really took off when being recognized by famed guitarist David T. Chastain who was the virtuoso lead guitarist for such bands as Spike, CJSS, and Chastain.

Dude can certainly shred...

 

Note: I respect him as an amazing guitar player, and while I was once a metal head, when Death Metal came around with those growling vocals, it was time for me for the most part give it up.

 

I got to see him play live before it ever got that extreme, and also see him shred in band practice settings when one of my best friends, who is a bassist, used to jam with him.

One of my best friends took lessons from Pat and Eric Cook (Lethal) in the late 80's. Speaking of Eric, I should mention that Lethal-Programmed was a great album.

I remember the hype surrounding Lethal, and joining many other metal heads at the VFW in Latonia for what was supposed to be a debut performance from them for the ages, however there was some technical difficulties that couldn't be resolved, and they never even got to play one song before it was announced that the show had been cancelled, and that everyone should make their way to the exits.

 

I recall them being compared to Queensryche, however I never did actually ever get to see them live, and don't recall ever hearing what they sounded like.

 

That was my one shot to see them, and considering that it was probably around '83 perhaps, I don't recall now why my chance didn't come again at a later date, however being aware of the scoop by word-of-mouth wasn't nearly as easy as it is now with the internet.

Very comparable to Queensryche, Fates Warning, and Nevermore. Pat was a member of Nevermore before he joined Cannibal Corpse.

Belew is a genius musician... I think the biggest star he ever played with was David Bowie... he had a long creative relationship with him.

 

I did one recording session with him. He was in and out in 30 minutes and we all spent the next 2 hours talking about how amazing he was... lol!

 

He mentioned he was from Ludlow, Ky and started out as a drummer... two things I never knew and never would've guessed.

Has anybody checked out Black Stone Cherry? They are from KY. They are extremely popular in Europe. I believe the drummer is the son of the drummer for The Kentucky Headhunters.

Ironic. I went to get a haircut today and the guy who does my hair mentioned Tyler Childers. Said his children love his music. I wasn't familiar with him until today and now heard his name twice in a span of five hours.
