Mt Rushmore of Kentucky Born Singers

Featured Replies

I'd venture to say that at least two are a mortal lock, Loretta Lynn and Bill Monroe. Any top 4 list without them is in my opinion invalid. So who would go along side them on the Mt Rushmore of KY Born Singers?

Dwight Yoakam, Tom T Hall, Sam Bush, Ricky Skaggs, The Everly Borthers, Patty Lovelace, The Judds, Montgomery Gentry all deserve some consideration along with many others.

I think it's a bit too early to consider Chris Stapleton or Sturgill Simpson but both could make a run at the mountain in years to come.

I've got...

Loretta Lynn

Bill Monroe

Osbourne Brothers (I'd put Bobby's head up with that big Pimp hat on it to represent them both)

Dwight Yoakam

So who is your 4?

EDIT: Because I'm Stupid!!!

My Four....

Loretta Lynn

Bill Monroe

Osbourne Brothers (I'd put Bobby's head up with that big Pimp hat on it to represent them both)

Keith Whitley

Cool thread, I can't wait to see more.

Bill Monroe

Loretta Lynn

Everly Brothers

Dwight Yoakam

I'll switch the Judds for Dwight.

I'll switch the Judds for Dwight.

They are very underrated.

I would think Rosemary Clooney would be on the list.

Only one of the Everly Brothers (Don) was born in KY, so I say they don't qualify.

Crystal Gayle maybe???

I would also "nominate" Jean Ritchie for discussion. Got to meet and talk with her several years ago; a true folk singing legend.

As odd as it sounds I think Crystal Gayle may have more #1 Country Hits than Loretta does. Loretta does have over 50 top 20 chart hits though.

Not yet Mt. Rushmore, and perhaps never will be depending on who's doing the judging, but noteworthy nonetheless, 33 year old Cellist, singer-songwiter, and multi-instrumentalist Ben Sollee from Lexington, Ky has steadily been mounting his music career with his very tasteful blended brand of heartland folk, bluegrass, jazz, and classical putting out 10 full length releases over the last 9 years.

Aside from his own solo work he has worked with countless other famous artists within the folky ranks.

I've had the pleasure of seeing him perform in 2010 when we put out the album "Dear Companion" with other Kentucky great, Cold Springs, Ky native and Campbell Co. H.S. grad Daniel Martin Moore.

Here's a more recent tune from Ben Sollee

That's correct, although pretty hard to believe at least for me. I couldn't name you more than one or two Gayle songs. I wonder if that includes the hits that Lynn had as duets with Conway.

Cold Spring, Ky native and Campbell Co. H.S. grad Daniel Martin Moore has now released 8 full lengths over the last 9 years.

This is the title track off of his 2015 release Golden Age

Here is Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore together with the lead off track to their 2010 release Dear Companion...

Over the last 15 years or so Louisville native Jim James has become massively famous as the leader of the jam rock band My Morning Jacket, and pretty much now is being considered the father of the this hippy genre now that Jerry Garcia has passed.

Just like Deadheads who travelled the country following The Grateful Dead, you now have hippies far and wide traveling to follow Jim James and My Morning Jacket.

Here is My Morning Jack live on Letterman in 2010...

Not Mt. Rushmore and never will be, but notable as a fine Kentucky artist, Covington native and Scott High grad Jesse Thomas wasted no time running off to L.A. immediately following graduation, and turned critics' heads with her tasty folky outpout on her first EP in 2010.

I've had the pleasure a couple of times catching her live on tour when she made her way back home to play locally.

Here's a fantastic in-studio performance from her singing songs from her first full length about 5 years ago.
