In high school football, is it better to have a top rate place kicker or a top rate punter??

I would take a top rate place kicker in a heartbeat. How many times do teams drive to the opposing team's thirty and come away empty handed. With a top rate kicker, you would come away with at least three points more often than not.

Not to mention that a missed extra point can be huge in a close game.

Definately true.. However, the field position game can be very crucial. Having a punter that can make the oppositions average start inside of their 30 is very nice to have.

That's still a 47 yard field goal, I don't think even the top rated kickers make that more often than they miss it at the high school level. The closer we get to the 20, the more I agree with what you're saying.

Both are very important. The most underrated part of the kicking game in Ky., is having a kicker than gets a touchback a lot. That's a huge weapon.

And a punter that can give you 40 or more yards per punt, is just as huge. Football has a lot of field, great kickers make the other teams offense see all of it often.

Both are very important to a teams success, but if it came down to choosing a great place kicker or great punter. The choice would be easy I would take the great place kicker anyday...

Depends on what type of team you have. If its strength is in the offense then definately a place kicker is more important. But if the strength is defense then field position if the most important part of the game.

Very good points.

Still, I can't tell you how many drives I see stalled inside the 25 where coaches go for it on 4th and long and come up empty. Plus, tons of missed and blocked XPs.

Just this season, I saw Madison Southern score a TD inside the final two minutes to pull within one, and instead of trying the XP to send it into OT, Carter went for two and the win and failed.

"I had no confidence in our kicking game," Carter said afterward, explaining his decision.

I'll take the kicker.

I'll take the punter as long as he can kick PATs...

Very good question. I think I would have to go with a placekicker, as long as he gives you touchbacks on kickoffs. The average of a team starting from the 20 or the 30 is like a 20% difference in scoring. It's much harder to drive 80 yards without some type of miscue than it is to go 70 or less. Both are important as we have had some punts blocked in big games, but if your placekicker can start them from the 20 I'd have to go with him.:thumb:

I will say placekicker...as ours Tommy McNutt, one of the best if not the best junior place kicker in the state, has already had one game winning FG off 45-yards in the final seconds to beat Hopkinsville and has over a 90% Touchback ratio the last four weeks not one of his kickoffs have been returnable and playing teams with top notch speed returning the kicks having that type of weapon to me is more important than having a good punter. The Cards are lucky enough to have both with senior punter Aaron Williams a very good punter the last three years.

Humm, I don't know

I don't know!! Flip a coin, depends on the game, although playoffs you really see how both help the team win the game. Both are very important. But I think there are more quality kickers out there than punters.

Need both. But if there is a choice, I would take a kicker over a punter.
