Offense is where the questions lie for this 2017 Fern Creek team. 5 starters return but must replace Kyree Hawkins and Devon Blincoe at RB, both were fast bruising runners who could bust thru the hole then outrace you to the endzone. In addition the Creek must replace 3 yr starting QB Shamar Bryant.

We have 2 junior QB's and a Sophomore. JR Rayshawn Nelson 5-9 148 has probably played the best of the three in 7 on 7 competition is smaller but fearless and makes good decisions has good arm strength. JR Isaiah Hester 6-1 211 is a big strong kid with a strong arm, and a great tough runner with the ball as well. 7 on 7 doesn't show Hester's full game because he is a big strong kid, tough to take down and a good runner and can break arm tackles and create time in the pocket. SO Jum Randella 5-11 205 joined the freshmen team last year a few weeks into the season and is a good young QB, has a good arm.

 

I have no idea how the QB battle will shake out, several possible options include starting Nelson at QB as and playing Hester at RB, could start Hester opting for the more physical QB and play Nelson as a slot WR. Or in a twist Randella stepping up to win the battle and playing Hester at RB and Nelson at WR. A Wildcat formation with 2-3 of those guys on the field at the same time would be an interesting wrinkle for the offense.

 

In addition to Hester possibly at RB, SO Anthony Teague 5-8 160, and SO VeSean Green 5-10 160 are two hard running guys with the quickness to evade tackles. JR Dylan Dunbar 6-1, 211 is a big bruising runner with surprising quickness. He was behind Hawkins and a Blincoe last year but had some big time plays including some long TD's in the playoffs.

 

3 starting offensive linemen return and the line is starting to come together well. We have had a smaller O line for years but this year are starting to get bigger and have some promising Juniors and Sophomores with good size that are stepping up and earning starting positions.

 

At WR Quartus Hearn 6-4 174 Was the leading WR last year in yards and TDs (5). He plays well as the big stretch the field receiver, and complimenting him are a good mix of guys. Melvin Blakey 5-11 145, William Neal 5-11 165, Blake Weihe 5-11 145. In addition Damon Durrah 5-10 170 ( offered by Morehead State and KWC ) will play more this year at WR after limited offensive reps last year. Durrah is an explosive athlete mainly as a CB that can set the edge and be physical stopping the run or drop back and break up passes and intercept the ball. He can be the quick footed slot guy or stretch the field and returned 1 kickoff and 2 punts for TD's last year and a fumble return for TD.

 

Fern Creek's scrimmage vs PRP will be a good test letting us now early how the offense is progressing as well as having a talented PRP offense to test our defense.

We haven't played PRP since moving down to 5A 2 years ago.

Not sure which QB's were which in the 7-v-7 but the WR's looked quick and took a good SK team to a 1 pt game. They seemed to struggle against Ryle but having a good D is key in these 7-v-7's in my opinion. Ryle just has huge DB's IMO for high school. Again could've easily been a different QB as well. Not indicative of anything for Fern Creek, I was just able to see them play twice down at the 7-v-7. Seems like Fern Creek always has some burners playing that can make a play at any given time. The head coach is an offense guy so he will probably get something pieced together, no? The defense may have a lot back but my question is they are now going into year 2 after losing the old DC who was in my opinion excellent, will he be missed more as 2 classes of his players have now graduated?

Coach Hillerich was going to retire after 2015 but ended up coming back as LB coach, this year he is Defensive Coordinator again.

Coach Abell is indeed an offensive guy (was Keenan Burton's center at Manual ) but this year he was promoted Coach Brown to Offensive Coordinator, Abell had called offense himself with input from Coaches Brown and Stoner. Coach Talley joins us from Moore as OL coach, and Ryan Montgomery is the new WR coach. Montgomery played at Canton McKinley HS and Kentucky State, and has coached in Cincy, Columbus, and Canton areas.

On defense we added Coach Horton at DB coach from Manual (also our track coach)

Fern Creek & Doss win the Rodney Dangerfield "No Respect" award for the pre-season. They get to move to the "EAST" side for the playoffs which should ease their path to a state final appearance. Meanwhile, most of the popular top 10 picks will get to battle for the right to represent the "WEST"
