Highlands 5 Conner 2

Featured Replies

Anyone have a box score? Q says 10 Ks for Rom in the last 5 and I'm pretty sure Dreves had at least 4 in the 1st 2 IP. That would be at least 14 of the 21 outs.

Leadoff walks in the 1st 3 innings were the biggest knock on the pitching.

#11 for Conner had both hits they secured.

Dreves had 5 K's and Rom had 10 K's.

Doty has pitched in a state final. I'll go with experience.

Conner's running game kept it close...they were able to get on due to errors or walks (not hits) and the birds couldn't figure out how to stop the "very large lead with a LH pitcher, go on 1st move no matter what" running game. A LH 1b simply needs to aggressively step in towards the pickoff throw from the P and throw to 2b to get the runner or P must have a step off move which would most likely catch the runner in a rundown as they move on 1st movement. If you stay back at the bag or fumble it as the birds did you have no chance to stop it. It's a very effective play that you better figure out or it will hurt you. Conner should have bunted IMO when they had less than 2 outs and a very fast runner on 3rd twice in the game before Rom entered the game. Congrats to both teams on great seasons.

I didn't see Conner play all year but it appeared their hitters couldn't even come close to hitting breaking balls. Did they not face that many pitchers with good stuff during the season? They also must have taken a 3rd strike at least 6 of those 15 Ks.

The thing that surprised me was the velocity that Rom displayed and made it look rather effortless.

For what it is worth, Doty gets the start for me next Friday night, if for no other reason that Johnson Central could not scout him. They were there in full force last night and had to walk out rather impressed with the Birds pitching.

Neither team hit the ball extremely well, but Highlands was able to string a few together which enabled them to push a couple of runs across. Big hit of the game was by Hennigan.

So is this in Johnsonville (football thread reference), or Lexington?

Congrats to both Highlands and Conner. They've become mainstays in the 9th region tourney.

Birds 3 years in a row as champs. 4 straight years and 5 of the last 6 years in the finals.

Conner with a championship in 2014 and the 3rd time since 2011 in the finals.

Heck of a run going.

#11 is Tim Sherman . He had one heck of a senior season. Don't know final stats but I would say he finished near the top in the region in batting avg. somewhere over .400
All regional team?

Congrats to all, and especially to the freshman from Dixie. One heck of a pitcher and an even better young man.

A really nice pitcher.

Someone explain to me how Doty doesn't make the all tourney team. He takes 'arguably' the best offensive team out out of the tourney and he doesn't make the team? Not only that.... he shuts down Beechwood and leaves the game and Rom gives up the tying run of the game...so they bring back Doty to win....and Rom makes the all tourney team? seems like a joke.

Do me a favor... pitch Rom against Beechwood next year. We will make it to State. Doty is a much better pitcher...

Sherm is a great kid who could play at the next level IMO. Not sure if he is but he would be a great addition to a college level team. Great team player and competitor. Hats off to Sherm.
