Handicap Stickers

Featured Replies

Sister in law has one. Skinny lady and you would never know she has a heart condition. Can't walk too far without getting worn out.

We have one in the car for the 92 year old mother in law. It has NEVER been on the rear view mirror unless she was with us.

I'm sorry, but my family is evidence that people can make great health choices and still be obese. I'm considered obese by BMI standards. I get plenty of excercise, my vitals are all excellent. But I often struggle to walk because if issues with my knees, hips and ankles. I don't have a handicapped sticker. My mother is obese, has crippling arthritis and has since her 30'a. My daughter is obese, has great health indicators, but has PCOS. My brother used to be obese, and I recently, jealously remared on his weight loss. Turns out he was doing meth. Almost everyone on my mom's side of the family is (or was) obese. My grandparents lived into their 90's, my mom's sister is approaching 80 and my mom is approaching 75.

The BMI is a terrible indicator of anything. It was meant to track obesity in Belgium in the 1700s over the whole population. Insurance companies here have really screwed up its original use. It was NEVER intended to be an indicator for individual obesity.

Also, eating healthy is such a broad term. How do you describe it? Is it the food pyramid? Is it whole grain? Is it organic? It definitely is not the Standard American Diet. Grains and gluten have destroyed society. Sugar is the biggest killer in the country. That's a topic for another time. My issue was with people who can do something about handicap stickers taking advantage of the situation. Again, this was from observing parking at Krogers over the weekend.

What did they say was the issue when you spoke with them?

Well, if you saw me, you'd say I didn't work out or was an over eater or didn't eat heathily, based on appearances alone. And your post very well points out that things aren't always what they seem

I get the frustration, but as has been said, obesity, especially morbid obesity often has nothing to do with laziness. It's often paired with serious psychological issues as a result of abuse, childhood trauma, etc. For some reason it's really easy to look down on or get angry with obese people, but the truth is how they got there is usually way more complicated than someone just being lazy or making a bunch of bad choices.

I have one but it's for mental.

Ah, yes. Next time I will make sure to get their illness. One lady looked about 30, was smoking w/ 2 kids in the car. She was thin. I should have asked.

I think the point is, you made a broad statement, based on a small sample, apparently gleaned on a day you were in a cranky mood. :D

Some call it a mood, most call it my typical disposition.

So you admit you don't know but by some super power you are able to diagnose that she didn't need to park there

Exactly! And a small sample that no one could know why know bc there was no conversation.

Some call it a mood, most call it my typical disposition.

...And then there's that. :lol2

I didn't know one could operate a motor vehicle while wearing a straight jacket. Impressive!

But again you have no idea why they are in the shape they are in. You look at an overweight person and dismiss them as making bad choices. Could be a bad back that doesn't allow them to exercise and has caused a weight gain, a failing heart or any of a 100 other conditions. I agree some abuse it, but unless you know the person personally you have no idea what their issue is.
Just because you can't exercise isn't an excuse to be so overweight you need a handicap sticker. Having a legit gland issue that causes you to gain and keep on weight is one thing but that is a very small percentage of the population.

Im not sure if you were trying to be funny, but I laughed. :lol2:
