You are exactly right, LBBC. Unfortunately, I don't always show the restraint and maturity that is needed, and that is a failing on my part.

There are some that have riled me in the past and I responded. Now I see their name and they have lost all credibility with me and I don't even read their posts. I look at it as I only have so much time in my life and I refuse to give them the 2 minutes of my life to read their posts.

 

And then there are the several that I enjoy/respect and love reading their posts because it challenges me to think and reflect on my views instead of dealing with a 8 year old name calling contest. You are definitely are in the latter, especially when you agree with me.

I never ceased to be amazed at how wise I am, when my thoughts align with yours.

 

On the other hand, when I find myself in agreement with Fastbreak, it gives me pause, and I usually revisit my position, just to be sure that the butter hasn't slipped off of MY biscuit.

I'm not even going to get into the fact that my banter in the sports forums are friendly in nature, and anyone who reads my posts know that I'm supportive of UK every game of the year, even in a limited fashion against Louisville (I stood up and cheered for Keenan Burton everytime he touched the ball, even when he torched us.)

He's not talking about converting "the Muslims that want to kill you." He's talking about "winning the hearts and minds" of the everyday, run-of-the-mill Muslim that simply wants to live a good life and for their families to be safe.

Actually what is fueling their fire is reports just like the one this thread is based on. Ask soldiers who have been in Iraq. The will tell you that our biggest enemy is our own media. The constant criticizm of the war by the video and print media only encourages the insurgents.

Actually know and personally have spoken with 3 who returned in the last year and Jim Shue's comment is more in line with what they said. These were front line transport and marine squad leaders and they never said anything about the media, just the sense that things were becoming more and more like wasted lives to them. :thumb:

Do you don't think that the terrorist and their sponsor feed off of the constant questioning of the war by our media? I have to believe that they see that eventually we will crack and pull out due to the constant pressure applied in print and on TV.

I think they are more apt to "keep it up" by seeing that there has never been a clear strategy that allows us to see just exactly the measurable aims and qualifiers of victory are in this war in Iraq.

It may be part of the equation, but it's not the most prominent variable — the way the current adminstration and its supporters make it out to be. The way they talk — and tell many of the troops how to think — is that our First Amendment protections are the only reason for the strength of the resistance and is the primary motivator for their "jihad."

 

And regardless of how big a variable it is — I refuse to sacrifice those rights that make our country strong just to help disguise and downplay failed foreign policy.

That's just the way an open society like ours works. This isn't red China or Stalinist Russia. Being able to reflect on and question U.S. policy is and always has been the way our country operates. The fact is, if the war in Iraq was as black and white as some supporters think, there wouldn't be nearly as much public dialogue about Bush's decision to invade and the consequences. If the President or his supporters don't like it that his competence and judgment are being questioned, maybe he should have been more cautious about starting a war.
