Any DIY Woodworkers out there in BGP land?

Featured Replies

I've been trying to stay off the couch and keep myself busy. Recently the wife asked if I had any room in my closet for some of her stuff. (REALLY Lady, it's not like you don't have 90% of the bedroom area already crammed with your clothes from your high school and partying days. Time to purge some of that older stuff)

Anyway, I asked if she'd be interested in a putting the bed on a platform bed with drawers for storage. She said yes. So I started researching and bought a few tools I would need.

Found this.

I'm in the final stages now. Stained one side and working on staining the others. After that, all that's left is the drawers.

I'll post some pictures later.

After this is complete, I'm planning on building an ultimate work bench in the garage.

So are any of you BGP'ers out there building anything?

Any suggestions on building the ultimate work bench?

@theguru - is it time for a DIY, automotive repair type forum?

Sounds like a cool project. I'd love to do that type of stuff, I just don't have the room to.

I've made a few 3 foot long American flags out of wood strips, but nothing the scope of what you are doing.

I wouldnt say ultimate, but i used two doors that the previous owners had painted then removed for whatever reason. They were placed in the outside garage. i screwed (4)4x4s to each at about 36' high. now i have plenty of room under the workebench for storage, plenty of room to work and keep my tools off the ground. doors are 96"x36". all im missing is electric which will be added this summer

I have a number of things on my list.

I got a planer for Christmas. I wanted to start making cutting boards this spring and see where that takes me. Don't have much time these days.

@NamecipS I plan to build a bench like this sometime this year.

That is the exact bench I was looking to build too. I want to add a vise and a small table top drill as well as the table saw.

Great Minds!

Those would be good additions.

I don't have any plans for it, was going to figure up the measurements myself.

I have built something similar to the above. My router table is built into the one end. My mitre saw is recessed on one side so the table top lays flush with the deck of the saw. On the other side, I have a hinged extension top. It was built at the height of my table saw.

Forgot about the router table.

It's becoming more complicated by the minute. Love it!

Looks like a nice bench. But (and it's hard to judge length based upon the picture itself) just make sure if you put your vice and drill press at the other end, that you still have enough clearance to feed a 4x8 sheet of plywood all the way thru your table saw.

Any suggestions on building the ultimate work bench?

I built a very basic workbench as a wedding present for a friend of mine a number of years back...8'wide, 30" deep, and 34" high. I made the top out of 2x4's that I laminated together, and basically kind of timber-framed the legs. He apparently never used it much, and then his wife borrowed an electric hand planer from someone, cleaned up the top, stained & sealed it, and put it in their living room as a couch/console table. It's pretty big for what they're using it as, but it admittedly looks pretty sharp cleaned up like that.

I've made several other projects over the years, ranging from built-in shelves to custom cabinets to bed frames...but my personal favorite is the Morris Chair I have in my living room. Built it out of red oak that I milled myself, and essentially every joint is mortise & tenon. I based mine off of this one, made by Gustav Stickley (if you like mission style or arts & crafts furniture and woodworking, you should familiarize yourself with Stickley).

I'm planning on remodeling the kids bathroom this year. As part of that I'm planning on building the vanity myself. It will actually end up be a double with a tower in the middle.

I build this a few years ago to give us some cover on our patio.

Funny this came up, I just saved this video. Thought I'd give it a go when the weather get a little better.
